Early life and background

Singhraj Adhana was born on 26 January 1982 in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, and grew up in Uncha Village, Ballabhgarh. Diagnosed with polio in his lower limbs as an infant, he belongs to a Gurjar family. His father, Prem Singh Adhana, worked as a farmer; his mother is Vedvati Singh Adhana. Singhraj is married to Kavita Singh Adhana and they have two sons, Naitik and Saurav. He lists travelling and watching movies among his hobbies.

Career

Singhraj began his shooting journey relatively late, taking up air-pistol shooting in 2017 at the age of 35. Competing in the SH1 classification, which covers athletes with lower limb or arm impairments who can support the firearm themselves, he made his international debut at the 2018 World Shooting Para Sport Championships in Cheongju, South Korea.

Within months of entering the international circuit he started collecting podium finishes. In 2018 he earned medals at the Châteauroux World Cup, including a team gold and an individual silver in P4 events. That year he also won bronze at the Para Asian Games in Jakarta. The following year, 2019, proved strong domestically and internationally: he collected medals at the 62nd National Shooting Championships in Kerala and contributed to podiums at World Cup stages and the World Championships.

Singhraj continued his momentum into 2021. In March he won gold at the Para Sport World Cup in Al Ain, UAE, defeating former Paralympic medallist Server Ibragimov in the final. Later that year, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics held in 2021, he earned two Paralympic medals: a bronze in the Men’s P1 10 metre air pistol SH1 and a silver in the Mixed 50m pistol SH1. His bronze final score (237.9) marked a personal best and represented one of India’s early medals at the Asaka shooting range during the Games.

Throughout his career he has worked with coach Subhash Rana. His competitive record includes multiple team and individual medals across World Cups and World Championships in P1, P4 and P6 events.

Public profile

Singhraj’s achievements attracted national attention. Following his Tokyo medals, he spoke publicly about techniques he used to recover composure in competition, mentioning brief meditation suggested by his coaches. He has acknowledged the financial and logistical challenges of pursuing shooting: he travelled long distances daily to train and has described family sacrifices made to support his career. During the COVID-19 pandemic he and the Paralympic Committee of India arranged a home shooting range so training could continue despite restrictions.

Outside sport, Singhraj is involved in social work focused on education for underprivileged and disabled children. He runs and serves as chairman of the Singhraj Sainik School in Faridabad.

Personal and family notes

Singhraj comes from a family with a notable history: his grandfather, Subedar Major Sumera Ram Adhana, served in the British Indian Army during the Second World War and was recognised with honours for his service. Singhraj has credited family support and coaching staff for enabling his rise despite economic hardship.

Latest updates

Singhraj’s recent highlights include the Al Ain World Cup gold in March 2021 and his two medals at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. He remains active in competition and community initiatives while serving as a visible figure for para-sport in India.
