Early life and backgroundSisir Kumar Adhikari was born on 19 September 1941 in Karkuli, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. Raised in a Hindu Brahmin family, he attended K.M. Vidyabhawan and later studied at Calcutta University, where his education record shows completion of intermediate science studies around 1960. His parents were Kenaram Adhikari and Kadambini Adhikari. He has made his home in the Contai area of Purba Medinipur.
Career
Adhikari’s public life spans local government, state politics and the national parliament. His first recorded public office was as a member of a gram panchayat in Basudebpur during the 1960s. He moved into municipal administration in Contai, serving as a commissioner from 1969 to 1971 and then as chairman beginning in 1971. He continued in municipal leadership through multiple long spells, including a cumulative stretch that totaled roughly three decades.
He entered party politics officially in 1972 when he joined the Indian National Congress. Over the following decades he remained active in regional affairs. He served terms as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for the Kanthi Dakshin constituency (first in the early 1980s and again in the early 2000s) and later represented Egra in the state assembly from 2006 until 2009.
At the national level, Adhikari was elected to the Lok Sabha three times—in 2009, 2014 and 2019. During the United Progressive Alliance government following the 2009 election, he served as Minister of State for Rural Development from 2009 to 2012. In subsequent parliamentary terms he was appointed to standing and consultative committees dealing with rural development, road transport, highways and shipping, with committee service noted from 2014 through 2019 and continuing with a rural development role from September 2019.
Political affiliations have shifted over his career. He spent many years with the Indian National Congress, later joined the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 and remained with that party until 2021. On 21 March 2021 he publicly joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at a rally in Egra, Purba Medinipur.

His family is prominent in politics: he is married to Gayatri Adhikari and is the father of four sons and a daughter; among his children are Suvendu, Dibyendu and Soumendu Adhikari, who are active in public life.
Outside politics, public records note basic personal details such as black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. His documented residential address is in Vill. Karkuli, P.O. Contai, District Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. Asset disclosures include ownership of a flat in Behala and several plots of land in the region, and a reported vehicle collection.
