Sneh Rana Biography
Indian off‑spinning all‑rounder from Dehradun who rose through domestic cricket to make a memorable international Test debut and later joined the Gujarat G
Early life and backgroundSneh Rana was born on 18 February 1994 in Sinola, Dehradun. Raised in a Rajput family, she grew up with strong support from her parents—her father, Bhagwan Singh Rana, worked as a farmer, and her mother, Vimla Rana, managed the home. From a young age she was sporty and tomboyish, often playing cricket with boys. That enthusiasm led her father to enrol her at Little Master’s Academy in Dehradun when she was nine.
She attended Doon Valley Public School in Dehradun and later studied at BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar. As a youngster she also played badminton and combined sport with academics, sometimes teaching other girls English and Maths while practising at the ground. She lists painting and travelling among her hobbies and enjoys sketching and painting in her spare time.
Career
A right‑hand batter and right‑arm off‑break bowler, Sneh progressed through regional cricket, moving from Uttarakhand to Haryana for opportunities at the under‑19 level before representing Punjab and then Railways in domestic competitions. She made her international T20 debut on 26 January 2014 and her One Day International debut on 19 January 2014, both against Sri Lanka. After several years of domestic cricket and recovery from injury, she made her Test debut in June 2021 against England in Bristol.
Sneh has been effective in domestic one‑day cricket; notably, she claimed 18 wickets for Railways in the Women’s Senior One Day Trophy 2020–21. Her Test debut brought her national attention: she became the first Indian woman and only the fourth player in the sport’s history to score a half‑century and take four wickets on Test debut, a rare all‑round achievement that highlighted her value in longer formats.
Her playing number for India is 2. At domestic level she has represented Punjab Women and Railways Women, and in the Women’s Premier League auction in February 2023 she was bought by Gujarat Giants.
Injuries and comeback
Sneh suffered a serious knee injury in 2016 that kept her out of international selection for an extended period. She continued to play domestically while undergoing rehabilitation, and after working with medical staff and specialists she returned to competitive cricket. Her determined recovery and eventual selection for the national side after injury have been central themes in her career; she has spoken about the difficulties of the process and the motivation she drew from staying hopeful and focused on making a return.
Public profile
Sneh’s performances drew praise from leaders within Indian women’s cricket. Following her performances in England in 2021, head coach Ramesh Powar described her as a standout find of the series and emphasised her temperament and ability to handle pressure in important moments. Off the field she enjoys a varied public life: she is a keen animal lover, maintains a regular fitness routine, posts her artwork and workout snapshots on social media, and appears in endorsements.
In 2022 she appeared as a guest on a popular television show alongside senior players, and in April 2022 she met Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Her connection to home remains strong: her family home displays her awards and she has spoken about the sacrifices her father made to support her cricketing journey.
Personal life
Sneh is unmarried. She has one sister, Ruchi Rana, who has spoken publicly about Sneh’s childhood and sporting instincts. Her favourite cricketer is Sachin Tendulkar and she enjoys moments from Bollywood, citing M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story as a favourite film. She maintains a visible presence on social media where she shares personal interests, training and endorsements.
