Early life and background

Soma Laishram was born on 5 January 1992 in Keishampat Dhobi Machu Leirak, Imphal, Manipur. She grew up in Imphal and attended Little Flowers School and Temple of Learning before moving on to higher studies. Soma completed a Bachelor of Arts (English Hons.) at G. P. Women’s College, Nandigama, Andhra Pradesh, and later earned a Master of Arts from CMJ University, Meghalaya.

From a young age she trained in Manipuri classical dance under Thounaojam Lata, beginning lessons at about six years old. As a teenager she started working in broadcasting, anchoring and presenting television programs on Doordarshan Manipur and later working as a news reader on a private channel. She left that job after her father’s passing. Early exposure to stage and screen came through teleplays, theatre and modelling work alongside family connections in choreography.

Career

Soma made her film debut in 2010, appearing as Linthoi in Phijang Marumda. She followed that with roles in Leima (2011) and continued to act across a range of Manipuri productions. Between 2012 and 2015 she took on parts such as Geeta in Ang Tamo and roles in Hiktharaba Samji (Pizza), Hingbagee Mahao, Nangna Nokpa Yengningi and Nungshi Feijei. Her body of work expanded through the late 2010s with notable appearances in films including Nurei (2018), Chanu IPS (2018), Hoo Chaage (2014) and Loibataare Ta Raju (2011).

In 2017 she starred as Tomba in Tomthin Shija and as Thoinu in Enakta Leiringei. The latter performance earned Best Actor - Female at the 11th Manipuri State Film Awards for her portrayal of Thoinu. She later played Laisna in Chanu IPS 2 (2019) and appeared as the mother of Thabatombi in Ima Machet Icha Tangkhai (2021), for which she received Best Supporting Actor - Female at the 10th MANIFA in 2022. Her credits continued into 2022 with roles in Thang Chani and Lairembi.

Outside feature films, Soma has appeared in music videos and commercials. She featured in a Meitei-Portuguese music video titled Nura Pakhang (Eu e Tu) in 2017 and released a music video titled Angaoba Malang in 2021, which she sang. She has modelled for fashion shows and walked runways for designers, and she has endorsed brands such as Kaizen Sports and Deal Jeans.

In 2020 she launched a YouTube channel where she publishes music videos and short content about makeup, diet, fashion and beauty. Her online presence also includes promotional work for commercial products and regular social posts that highlight lifestyle and styling.
