Somabhai Modi (Narendra Modi's Brother) Biography

Somabhai Damodardas Modi is a retired municipal health inspector, social activist and long-time BJP member from Vadnagar, Gujarat. Elder brother of Prime M

Early life and background
Somabhai Damodardas Modi was born on 19 November 1942 in Vadnagar, then part of Mehsana district in the Bombay Presidency of British India. He is from the Modh Ghanchi community and was raised in a family that included his parents Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Heeraben Modi. He grew up alongside several siblings, including Narendra Modi, who later became Prime Minister of India.

Career
Somabhai entered public service early in his adult life. At 18 he cleared the recruitment examination for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and joined the health department. He spent more than three decades with the corporation and retired in 1993 with the rank of inspector.

A year after retirement, in 1994, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Within the party he was assigned responsibilities that involved visiting constituencies across Gujarat to gather information about local issues and report back to party leadership. Despite his association with the BJP, Somabhai has described politics as something that never attracted him personally and has repeatedly declined invitations to engage in active political life.

Social work and initiatives
Somabhai has been active in social service for many years. He founded the Sarvodaya Seva Trust on 26 March 1999 to pursue charitable activities. Under this trust he established several welfare projects in memory of his father. An old age home, originally named Visamo Vruddhashram, was set up on 29 January 2001 on Vasant Panchami; it later marked its 20th anniversary in February 2021 and was renamed Swargast Damordas Moolchand Modi Sewasharam, with Heeraben Modi participating in the inauguration of a bust of Damodardas.

Further expansions of his charitable work include a physiotherapy centre started on 7 May 2006 and a Dard Nivaran Suvidha Kendra created on 13 July 2014 to treat people suffering from severe neck and back pain. These projects reflect a long-standing focus on elder care and rehabilitation services in his home region.

Public profile
Somabhai has occasionally spoken in interviews about family matters and public life. He has expressed concern when family members entered politics, recalling that he worried about the instability a political career could bring. He has been careful about public displays of personal acquaintances in official contexts and once advised his brother about the optics of highlighting personal connections during a public event.

Outside of his formal roles, Somabhai has served with civic-oriented organizations such as Global Indians for Bharat Vikas, where he held the position of vice president. His interests include reading, and he favors works by Gujarati and Hindi authors such as Kanhaiyalal Munshi, Ramanlal Desai, Pannalal Patel and Munshi Premchand.

Personal life
Somabhai is married to Chandrika and is a father of two sons, both of whom trained as mechanical engineers. He remains identified with his hometown of Vadnagar in Gujarat, where many of his social initiatives have been concentrated.

Latest updates
In February 2021 the old age home he founded completed 20 years and was rededicated in memory of his father. Family members and close associates attended a small inauguration where a bust of Damodardas was unveiled. Somabhai continues to live a life oriented toward community service and local initiatives rather than active party politics.
