Early life and background

Sonal Devraj was born on 4 September 1990 in Chennai and spent part of her schooling years in Bahrain. She completed higher education at Smt. M.M.K. College of Commerce & Economics in Mumbai, earning a Bachelor of Management Studies and completing a certified management accounting course. Her parents are Devraj and Vidhya Devraj.

From childhood she trained in Bharatnatyam and later learned jive and Bollywood styles. While living in Bahrain she expanded her dance education by exploring other forms, building a broad foundation that informed her later work as a performer and teacher.

Career

Sonal began her public journey in performance and modelling after participating in pageants, having been named second runner‑up in the Miss Kerala contest in 2010. She made a film debut in the Malayalam movie Mullassery Madhavan Kutty Nemom P. O. in 2012 but decided not to continue acting professionally after reporting negative experiences with some producers and directors.

Alongside friend Nicole Concessao, Sonal co‑founded Team Naach in 2014. The company grew out of a college friendship and a shared interest in dance; the pair had joined their college dance team together in 2007. Initially balancing corporate jobs after graduation, they eventually committed to teaching, launching classes that began with around 20 students.

Team Naach offers instruction in a wide range of styles, including Bollywood, hip hop, belly fusion, classical fusion and freestyle, and provides classes to students of many ages both across India and abroad. A turning point for their online visibility came when they posted a multi‑style rendition of Prabhudeva’s Muqabala, blending hip hop, Kathak and belly dance. That clip and other online content helped them attract a large following and many new students.

The Team Naach YouTube channel is a major platform for their work and has amassed millions of subscribers, reflecting the company’s reach in digital dance education and entertainment. Sonal has spoken about the challenges of creating online material, noting that sustaining fresh ideas requires regular brainstorming with a team to keep content new and engaging.
