Sonal Jha Biography

Sonal Jha is an Indian actress from Patna, Bihar, with a long career in theatre, television, and film. Trained in Kathak and educated in India and the U.S,

Early life and background

Sonal Jha was born on 29 July 1971 in Patna, Bihar. Raised in a large family, she is one of six siblings and the daughter of Nitiranjan and Indurani Jha. From childhood she was active in the performing arts: she began working with the Patna branch of the Indian People’s Theatre Association at age 11 and, by her mid-teens, was performing as an actress and singer locally. She also holds a Prabhakar qualification in Kathak.

Jha completed undergraduate studies in Hindi medium before moving to Delhi for postgraduate work, an experience she found linguistically and culturally challenging. Her higher education includes studies at Miranda House, Delhi University, and at Ithaca College in New York. She earned a master’s degree in history and a separate master’s in corporate communications.

Before committing full-time to acting, Jha worked in the corporate sector in Mumbai. That early professional experience exposed her to corporate life and people skills but ultimately she left the job because of work pressure. In 2000 she relocated to Mumbai with her husband and son when her husband took a job there.

Career

Jha returned to theatre in 2004 as a member of the Ekjute Theatre Group, where she worked under Nadira Babbar and appeared in plays that toured across India. Her stage credits include productions such as Ithihas Tumhe Le Gaya Kanhayiya, Suman Aur Sana, Bali Aur Shambhu, Pagla Ghoda, Tumhara Vincent, CanServive, and a stage version of Mughal-e-Azam.

Her on-screen debut came with the English-language film Return to Rajapur (2006), followed by television work including the series Bombay Lawyers on NDTV India (2007). After numerous auditions and theatre performances she was cast by director Prakash Jha in the Bhojpuri television series Bahubali in 2008.

Over time she established a steady presence in both television and film. Television roles include appearances in Hum Ladkiyan (2008) as Subhadra, Sapno Ke Bhanwer Main (2011) as a mother on Life OK, Balika Vadhu (2012) as Irawati, and Ek Rishta Saajhedari Ka (2016) as Chandra Bua. She stepped back from television after 2016 and focused more on theatre for several years.

Her film work features character roles in a number of notable projects. She played Encyclopedia’s mother in Chillar Party (2011), Shanti Bua in Aarakshan (2011), Leela’s mother in Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017), Malini’s mother in 3 Storeys (2018), Rajni Tripathi in Malaal (2019), and in 2023 she portrayed Madho’s mother in Coat. A short film she appeared in, MAD, won the Perfect 10 award at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2018.

Public profile

Jha has described the practical challenges of balancing acting with family life, especially in the early years when long shooting days and commutes made childcare and home responsibilities difficult. She has also spoken about creative disagreements on television productions, and in response to shifts in content and characterizations she reduced her TV work to concentrate on theatre.

Her film Lipstick Under My Burkha attracted controversy when the Censor Board restricted its release in 2017 on grounds that included sexual content and language, a widely reported decision that affected the film’s public journey.

Latest updates

In recent years Jha’s visible screen credits have included a role in the web series Sunflower (2021) on ZEE5 as Mrs. Iyer and the 2023 film Coat. She continues to be associated with stage work and occasional screen projects.
