Early life and backgroundSonalben Manubhai Patel was born on 15 September 1987 in Viramgam, Gujarat. She grew up in her hometown and attended Geeta Higher Secondary School before enrolling at the Blind People’s Association, where she completed a course in ITI. Sonalben faced polio during infancy, which left her with a high degree of disability. Despite early setbacks, her family and later mentors played roles in shaping her path toward sport.
Career
Sonalben took up table tennis after encouragement from staff at the Blind People’s Association, where Tejalben Lakhia motivated her to try the sport. What began as a hobby developed into a professional pursuit, aided by hours of practice and support from her coach Lalan Doshi and from her husband, who also mentored her in the sport.
She has competed nationally and internationally since 2008. A left-handed player, Sonalben represented India at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. While she did not win a medal there, she described representing her country at the Games as a significant achievement.
The year 2022 was a standout season. Sonalben won two gold medals and a bronze at the Fa40 Egypt Para Open. Later that year at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham she earned a bronze medal in the women’s singles event after a straight-sets win over Britain’s Sue Bailey. This marked her first singles medal at the Commonwealth Games and a major milestone in her career. Over the course of her competitive years through August 2022, she had accumulated multiple podium finishes, including more than three golds, four silvers and six bronzes across events.
Her competitive record also includes medals at other international tournaments, and she was recognized earlier in her career with the Eklavya Award from the Government of Karnataka in 2014. Sonalben cites the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics as a turning point in her athletic trajectory.
Public profile
Sonalben is noted for competing as a para-athlete in table tennis while training and competing left-handed. Her hair is black and her eyes are dark brown. She has been open about the barriers she faced in non-sporting employment, explaining that attempts to pursue a teaching career were unsuccessful because of her disability. Those experiences were part of what led her to focus on sport and education through institutions that support people with disabilities.
She is married to fellow para-athlete Ramesh Chaudhary. Sonalben has frequently dedicated her achievements to her husband, coach, family and supporters.
