Sonali Bendre Biography

Actress, model and author Sonali Bendre emerged in the mid-1990s and built a multi-lingual film career while also working on television and writing. Born 1

Early life and background

Sonali Bendre Behl was born on 1 January 1975 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up in a Marathi household. Her father worked for the Central Public Works Department, a role that moved the family frequently and shaped a childhood spent in different cities. She attended Kendriya Vidyalaya Malleswaram in Bengaluru, Holy Cross Convent High School in Thane and Welham Girls School in Dehradun before graduating from Ramnarain Ruia College.

She was discovered while modelling during a college fashion show. That impromptu runway appearance led to further modelling assignments and eventually to her being noticed by filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, which opened the door to a career in films.

Career

Sonali began acting in the mid-1990s. Although her first acting project was Naaraaz (1994), another early film, Aag (1994), reached audiences first and brought her immediate recognition. Across the late 1990s and 2000s she worked in multiple Indian film industries, making debuts in Tamil with Kadhalar Dhinam (1999), Kannada with Preethse (2000), Telugu with Murari (2001) and Marathi with Anahat (2003). She also branched into television, hosting Kya Masti Kya Dhoom in 2001 and later serving as a judge on shows such as India’s Got Talent and India’s Best Dramebaaz.

Her screen presence and looks made her a prominent figure in the late 1990s even when her slate did not include a large number of commercial hits. Early awards recognized her as a promising newcomer following Aag, and she later won accolades for supporting and regional performances, including a best supporting actress award for Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000) and recognition for her work in the Marathi film Anahat (2003). On television she earned awards for her judging roles and popularity on reality programming.

Beyond acting, Sonali has written about parenting and reading. She published The Modern Gurukul: My Experiment with Parenting in 2015, reflecting on her experiences as a mother. In 2017 she launched a digital reading initiative called Sonali’s Book Club to promote reading.

Public profile

Sonali’s personal life has been part of her public profile. She married filmmaker Goldie Behl in Mumbai on 12 November 2002 after a several-year courtship; the couple have a son, Ranveer Behl, born in 2005. Her family includes her parents, Jit and Roopsi Bendre, and sisters Rupa Ranadive and Gandhali Paranjape.

She has been open about aspects of her lifestyle and preferences: she is non-vegetarian, enjoys cooking, travelling and collecting art bric-a-bracs, and is an avid reader and dog lover. Sonali has also spoken about being allergic to perfumes. Her living space in Juhu, Mumbai, has been noted for interior design contributions from friends and designers.

Latest updates

In July 2018 Sonali publicly shared that she had been diagnosed with high-grade metastatic cancer. In 2018 a Jodhpur court acquitted her, alongside several co-accused, in a high-profile legal case dating back to 1998. Across her career she continued to work in film and television and to cultivate projects tied to writing and reading.

Legacy and recognition

Over three decades Sonali Bendre has built a varied career across multiple languages and formats. From early recognition as a fresh face in Bollywood to awards for supporting and regional performances and a later pivot into television judging and authorship, she has maintained a visible presence in Indian popular culture. Her initiatives around reading and parenting broaden her public identity beyond acting.
