Early life and backgroundSonali Kulkarni was born on 3 November 1974 in Pune, Maharashtra. She grew up in Pune, attended Abhinava Vidyalaya and went on to earn a B.A. in Political Science from Fergusson College. Theatre was an early influence: her elder brother’s involvement in stage work introduced her to acting, and she later worked with theatre figures including Pt. Satyadev Dubey.
Career
Kulkarni made her film debut as a teenager, appearing in the Kannada film Cheluvi (1992). Throughout the 1990s she built a reputation through a number of regional and festival films, including Mukta (1994, Marathi), May Madham (1994, Tamil), Daayraa (1996, Hindi) and Vrindavan Film Studios (1996, English). Her performances in critically acclaimed Marathi titles such as Doghi (1995) and Devrai (2004) earned attention on the festival circuit.
Her profile broadened after appearing in the 2000 commercial film Mission Kashmir, in which she played a role that brought her wider recognition with mainstream audiences.
