Sonam Wangchuk (Engineer) Biography
Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer and innovator from Ladakh known for education reform, sustainable campus design, and the invention of the Ice Stupa. A
Early life and backgroundSonam Wangchuk was born on 1 September 1966 in Uley Tokpo, a small village in Ladakh. He grew up in a community with very limited educational facilities; his mother taught him basic lessons in his native tongue until he was about eight years old. As a young boy he briefly attended a nearby school but struggled there because the language used by teachers and classmates was unfamiliar.
In 1977 Wangchuk moved to Delhi and enrolled at Vishesh Kendriya Vidyalya, a free residential government school established for children from border areas. He later studied at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, where he completed a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. Against his father's preference for civil engineering, Wangchuk chose mechanical engineering and supported himself through tutoring when his father refused to pay his college fees. He went on to study at CRAterre, the School of Architecture in Grenoble, France, and earned a master's degree in earthen architecture.
Career
After completing his studies, Wangchuk focused on practical solutions for education and the environment in his native region. In 1988 he founded the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). The organization aims to restore pride and confidence among Ladakhi students by reforming educational practices and adapting schooling to local needs. Wangchuk also designed the SECMOL campus with sustainability in mind; the campus operates entirely on solar energy and avoids fossil fuels for cooking, lighting, and heating even during the region’s severe winters.
In 1994 Wangchuk was instrumental in launching Operation New Hope, a collaborative initiative that brought together government bodies, village communities, and civil society to reform government schools. The movement focused on improving the quality of education and dramatically raised the pass rate for the 10th-grade examinations in the area.
Wangchuk’s work in education earned him recognition at the national level. In 2005 he was appointed as a member of the National Governing Council for Elementary Education within the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Innovation and the Ice Stupa
Wangchuk has combined engineering and local knowledge to address water scarcity for farmers in high-altitude areas. In late 2013 he developed and built a prototype called the Ice Stupa—an artificial glacier that captures stream water in winter and freezes it in conical ice formations. These ‘stupas’ store water during the cold months and release it as they melt in spring, providing critical irrigation when it is most needed.
The Ice Stupa concept gained international attention and earned Wangchuk a high-profile award in 2016. In November of that year he received a Rolex Award for Enterprise for the Ice Stupas project. At the award ceremony he was presented with a cash prize of 100,000 Swiss francs and a commemorative Rolex timepiece.
Public profile
Wangchuk’s combination of educational activism, practical engineering, and inventive low-tech solutions has made him a visible figure beyond Ladakh. His life and work have been cited as an inspiration for popular culture portrayals, and he is widely associated with efforts to adapt modern education and technology to the needs of mountain communities.
Latest updates
In addition to ongoing work with SECMOL and promotion of the Ice Stupa concept, Wangchuk continues to advocate for education reform and sustainable, locally appropriate engineering solutions in high-altitude regions. His projects emphasize community involvement, low-energy technologies, and resilience to climatic challenges.
