Sooraj Thelakkad Biography
Sooraj Thelakkad is a Malayalam actor, comedian and mimicry artist known for his breakthrough role in Android Kunjappan Version 5.25. Born in Perintalmanna
Early life and backgroundSooraj Thelakkad was born on 4 September 1995 in Perintalmanna, Kerala. He and his sister were both affected by a growth condition that limited their height; Sooraj has described how this influenced his childhood and schooling. He attended Government L.P. School, Thelakkad, and G H S Vengoor before moving on to St. Mary’s College, Puthananghadi. He holds an M.Com degree.
Career
Sooraj began performing mimicry at around age ten, learning the craft from his father. He competed in school arts festivals, including the State School Children’s Festival in Thrissur, and received top grades in the Kerala School State Kalolsavam for mimicry in consecutive years. His early stage work led to television opportunities, and he first appeared on TV as a supporting artist in Bhima Jewels Comedy Festival Season 1 in 2012.
Over the next several years he developed a profile as a stand-up comedian and impressionist. He joined the cast of Comedy Super Nite in 2015 and remained with that show for about four years. Between 2017 and 2019 he started taking small film roles, appearing in cameo parts in Cappuccino, Udaharanam Sujatha and Vimaanam. He also featured in films such as Oru Adaar Love, Ambili and Dhamaka.
Sooraj’s public recognition rose sharply in 2019 when he played the central role in Android Kunjappan Version 5.25, directed by Ratheesh Poduval. For the film he performed inside the costume of the title character and maintained the illusion for many days during shooting. The physical demands of the role were considerable: the costume weighed several kilograms, required help from an assistant on set, and took about an hour each day to put on because of its construction. Sooraj has discussed the strain of shooting in the heavy, hot attire and the practical steps taken to adapt his look for the role.
After Android Kunjappan he continued to work on television and stage. In 2021 he hosted the game show Udan Panam 3.0 on Mazhavil Manorama. In 2022 he entered the house as a contestant on Bigg Boss Malayalam season 4, further increasing his visibility with mainstream audiences.
Public profile
Sooraj’s work has drawn attention not only to his comic and mimicry skills but also to the adaptations he has made to pursue a career in entertainment. He has spoken about how his stature has sometimes made him more noticeable in auditions and onstage, and how that visibility opened doors for him. Members of the film and comedy community publicly acknowledged his performance in Android Kunjappan when it was revealed he had been inside the robot suit.
Personal life and home
Sooraj’s parents are Alikkal Mohanan, who worked as a collection agent at Vanitha Co-operative Bank, and Jyothilakshmi, a homemaker. He has a sister named Swathisree. Family circumstances and genetic factors contributed to both siblings’ short stature. The family originally lived in their father’s ancestral single-storey house. In 2019 Sooraj and his family completed construction of a new two-storey home designed specifically for the needs of Sooraj and his sister, with lower shelves, switches, washbasins and shorter stair steps to ensure accessibility. He has described how the house was built with a combination of savings and a loan and how meaningful it was to have a home suited to their requirements.
Sooraj enjoys driving and worked to obtain a four-wheeler driving licence. To address height-related barriers, he used an adapted car seat so he could meet licensing requirements and drive comfortably. After receiving his licence, he took a personal trip to Wayanad.
