Early life and background

Sophie Frances Monique Devine was born on 1 September 1989 in Kenepuru Hospital, Porirua, and grew up in Tawa, a northern suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. Sport featured prominently in her childhood: encouraged by a sporting family, she played cricket, hockey, soccer, basketball and netball, joining a local club at age five and even featuring in the boys’ premier hockey team at the Tawa club. Her family includes parents Peter and Penny Devine and three siblings: a brother, Sam, and two sisters, Jen and Kate.

Devine attended Greenacres School and Tawa College in Wellington before moving with her family to Christchurch in 2006. She later studied at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and went on to the University of Canterbury, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology while continuing to develop her sporting career. As a teenager she made her first‑class cricket debut for Wellington Women at age 14 and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 15.

Career

Devine established herself as a dual international, representing New Zealand in both field hockey and cricket. She played for the Black Sticks women, making 36 test appearances for the hockey side and earning selection for tournaments such as the 2011 Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy. After missing selection for the 2012 London Olympics, she transitioned her focus fully to cricket following the release of New Zealand Cricket development contracts in 2013.

Her international cricket career began as a teenager: she made her T20 and ODI debuts in October 2006 against Australia. A right‑hand batter and right‑arm medium‑pace bowler, Devine has worn the New Zealand jersey number 77 and has played domestically for Wellington Blaze across her career, with stints at Canterbury and multiple overseas and Australian state and franchise teams.

At domestic and franchise level, Devine has represented a long list of sides, including Canterbury, South Australia, Adelaide Strikers, Loughborough Lightning, Warwickshire, Yorkshire Diamonds, Western Australia, Perth Scorchers and Birmingham Phoenix, and in 2023 she joined Royal Challengers Bangalore for the inaugural Women’s Premier League.

Devine’s game is built around aggressive strokeplay and useful seam bowling. She has broken multiple records and registered several standout performances: in July 2015 she produced one of the fastest T20 half‑centuries in women’s cricket and hit 32 off a single over in that same match; in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup she struck nine sixes in a 93‑run innings against Pakistan; and in January 2021 she scored 100 from 36 balls for Wellington Blaze in the Super Smash, establishing the women’s T20 record for the fastest century.

Her prolific form continued through the late 2010s and into the 2020s. Devine scored the first T20I century by a New Zealander in February 2020 and became the first international cricketer — male or female — to record five consecutive 50‑plus scores in T20 internationals. In 2020 she also set a record of six consecutive T20I fifties, a feat she repeated during the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup where she made 105 in New Zealand’s opening match. She has been recognised with multiple individual honours, including New Zealand Cricket awards for Player of the Year in both ODI and T20 women’s categories for the 2017/18 season, and ANZ International Women’s T20 Player of the Year in 2019.

Devine has played prominent roles in major tournaments and leagues. She was part of the Adelaide Strikers in the early seasons of the Women’s Big Bash League, starred in the WCSL with Loughborough Lightning where she finished among the leading wicket‑takers, and was named Player of the Series in WBBL|05 after topping the run charts in that campaign. She captained New Zealand on an interim basis in early 2020 and was appointed full‑time captain by July of that year. Under her leadership New Zealand won the bronze medal in the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and she took her 100th WT20I wicket during that event.

Public profile

Devine is known for an attacking batting style and for several personal trademarks. She prefers not to wear a helmet at the crease, a habit she has described as a comfort choice, and has a racket‑ball tattoo on her right elbow. Off the field she enjoys rugby, having played for Petone ponies, and pursues activities such as yoga and golf. Her favourite cricketing and sporting influences include Brett Lee, Nathan Astle, Stephen Fleming and Roger Federer.

Latest updates

In 2021 Devine reached the milestone of 100 WT20I appearances, becoming the third New Zealand woman to reach that mark, and she continued to feature across top global T20 competitions, including The Hundred and the FairBreak Invitational T20.

In 2023 she was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the first Women’s Premier League. She remains a central figure for New Zealand cricket as a high‑impact allrounder and captain.
