Sophie Ecclestone Biography
England’s slow left-arm orthodox bowler Sophie Ecclestone rose quickly through county and national pathways to become one of the leading wicket-takers in a
Early life and backgroundSophie Ecclestone was born on 6 May 1999 in Chester, Cheshire, England, and grew up in the nearby village of Helsby. Sport featured strongly in her childhood: she played football and cricket alongside her older brother James and learned much of her early game from family involvement at Alvanley Cricket Club, where her father acted as junior coordinator. Ecclestone joined the club’s junior section at seven and progressed through Cheshire age-group cricket, moving into the Cheshire Under-13s pathway before making the step into county cricket.
Career
Ecclestone’s ascent through the domestic system was rapid. She began representing Cheshire in 2013 and signed for Lancashire soon after, making her first‑class debut for Lancashire Women versus Nottinghamshire in 2015 at age 16. That year she was also selected for the England Academy winter squad and toured Sri Lanka with the group, finishing the tour as one of its leading wicket-takers.
Her international career began in 2016. Ecclestone made her T20 International debut on 3 July 2016 against Pakistan and picked up her first international wicket during that match. She followed that with an ODI debut on 8 October 2016 against the West Indies, and made her Test debut on 9 November 2017 against Australia during the Women’s Ashes.
Ecclestone established herself as a key bowler for England across formats. She was part of England’s squads for major tournaments including the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20, when England reached the final, and the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. During the 2020 tournament she reached the milestone of 50 WT20I wickets, becoming the youngest woman to reach that mark in the format and recording her 100th international wicket at the same time. Her performances during that World Cup also moved her to the top of the WT20I bowling rankings.
Across domestic and franchise cricket she has represented a range of teams. Her domestic teams include Lancashire, North West Thunder and Manchester Originals. In franchise cricket she has featured for Lancashire Thunder, Trailblazers, Supernovas, Sydney Sixers, Spirit (FairBreak Invitational), and in 2023 was bought by UP Warriorz for the inaugural Women’s Premier League. She was part of IPL Trailblazers’ winning side in the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge and later played for Supernovas when they claimed the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge title. In the 2022 FairBreak Invitational T20 she finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 17 dismissals. At the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand she topped the tournament bowling charts with 21 wickets, including a career-best 6/36 in the semi-final against South Africa.
Public profile
Ecclestone is known for slow left-arm orthodox bowling and bats right-handed. She wears the number 19 jersey for England and also uses that number in some franchise competitions. Her physical presence is notable—listed at about 180 cm (5 ft 11 in)—and she is regularly described by teammates and commentators as a leading young bowler in women’s cricket.
Her achievements have been recognised at county level as well: in 2017 she received Lancashire Cricket Board’s young player of the year award, and Alvanley Cricket Club later honoured her with lifetime membership. The England and Wales Cricket Board has awarded her a full central contract, reflecting her status within the national setup.
Personal life
Ecclestone attended Helsby High School and has spoken about alternative career plans she might have pursued outside cricket, saying she would consider becoming a physical education teacher. She is engaged to Craig Hitchmough. Her parents are Paul and Elaine Ecclestone and her brother is James.
Latest updates
In 2022 she was selected for England’s squad for the Women’s Ashes and for the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The 2022 and 2023 seasons saw her continue to play across domestic, franchise and international competitions, including The Hundred for Manchester Originals and a high‑profile purchase by UP Warriorz for the inaugural WPL in 2023.
Ecclestone remains a central figure in England’s bowling attack and a regular selection across global franchise tournaments, continuing to add milestones and tournament-leading figures to her record as her career progresses.
