Sorabh Pant Biography

Mumbai-born comedian Sorabh Pant is one of India’s stand-up pioneers. A writer-turned-performer, he co-founded the East India Comedy collective, built a TV

Early life and background

Sorabh Pant was born on 14 September 1981 in Mumbai, India. He grew up in the city that remains his hometown and completed his schooling at St. Mary’s School (ISC), Mumbai. He went on to study commerce at Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics, earning a B.Com and later an M.Com.

Pant’s parents both worked as Income Tax Commissioners before retirement. He has a sister, Meghna Pant, who is an author and journalist. Raised in a household where reading and public life were familiar, he developed interests that would later inform his career in writing and performance.

Career

Pant began his professional life as a television writer, contributing to programming on channels such as Pogo, Star World, CNBC, and ET Now. Early in his trajectory he worked with Vir Das on the TV show News on The Loose, and that connection helped pivot him toward stand-up comedy.

His first experiences on stage were rocky; Pant has described his early gigs as disastrous, but he persisted. He performed opening sets for international comedians visiting India, including Wayne Brady and Rob Schneider, and has been recognised by peers for his sharp stage presence. Over time he developed solo shows and specials, debuting his first solo show Pant on Fire in 2009. Subsequent specials have included The Traveling Pants, Making Money For My Kids, Born on Mars, My Dad Thinks He’s Funny, and Make India Great Again. The last two of these premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2017 and 2018.

In 2012 Pant co-founded the comedy collective East India Comedy (EIC), assembling a team of Indian stand-up performers to create videos, stage shows, corporate events, and workshops. Under his leadership EIC became one of India’s most active comedy companies, staging numerous shows across the country. Pant left the group in 2017 to focus on his solo career.

Beyond the stage, Pant has written three books. His debut novel, The Wednesday Soul (2012), took a comic look at life after death. He followed that with Under Delhi in 2014 and Pawan: The Flying Accountant in 2017. He has also maintained a presence on YouTube, where his channel hosts stand-up clips, podcasts, and interviews; the channel has amassed several hundred thousand subscribers.

By 2020 Pant had performed extensively: more than 2,000 shows in over 100 cities worldwide, alongside hundreds of corporate appearances and college headliners. He has also been associated with Black Dog Easy Evenings, performing across India through that events platform.

Public profile

Pant is widely regarded as one of the early figures in contemporary Indian stand-up comedy and has been named by publications among the country’s top comics. A 2012 poll listed him among the most interesting Twitter users in India. Pant mixes observational and topical humour, and his stage work has put him on both national and international platforms.

On a personal level, Pant is married to writer Iva Bagchi; they married on 12 February 2011 and have two children, a son named Vikramaditya and a daughter named Tara. He is a non-vegetarian, enjoys playing cricket and travelling, and cites comedians such as Jaspal Bhatti, Johnny Lever and Jon Stewart among his influences. He has said he drinks alcohol and lists favourite books and musicians that reflect a wide range of tastes.

Pant has also been a visible target for online criticism at times, including trolling and threats related to his public positions and material. He has spoken about developing a thick skin from early experiences of both praise and ridicule.

Latest updates

After leaving East India Comedy in 2017, Pant continued to concentrate on stand-up specials, touring and writing. His Amazon Prime Video premieres in 2017 and 2018 expanded his audience beyond live venues. As of 2020 his live-performance résumé included thousands of shows worldwide and a significant body of solo work.

Quick paragraph on style and influence

Pant’s humour blends personal anecdote, topical commentary and character work. He has helped cultivate a professional stand-up scene in India through both performance and mentorship, bringing a generation of comics together during his time with EIC and then pursuing an independent path that emphasises solo specials, books and digital content.
