Soumya Tiwari Biography
Soumya Tiwari is an Indian batting all-rounder from Bhopal who rose through state-level ranks to become vice-captain of India’s victorious squad at the 202
Early life and backgroundSoumya Manish Tiwari was born on 11 March 2005 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. She grew up in a joint, middle-class family in Shahjahanabad (Old Bhopal) before the household moved to Gautam Nagar in New Bhopal. Her father, Manish Tiwari, played local division cricket in his younger days and later worked as an election supervisor at the Bhopal Collectorate. Her mother, Bharti Tiwari, is a homemaker. Soumya has a sister, Sakshi Tiwari.
Soumya’s earliest experiences with the sport were informal: she practised with improvised equipment, playing with a wooden stick and paper balls and joining local street games. That determination led her sister to enroll her at the Arera Cricket Academy at Old Campion ground when Soumya was about 11. After persistence and persuasion, coach Suresh Chainani agreed to train her over a summer break, initially focusing on bowling before working on her batting. She trained alongside boys at the academy for roughly three years and caught the attention of state selectors at the age of 13.
Career
Soumya is a right-handed batter and a right-arm off-break bowler who plays as a batting all-rounder. Her domestic team is Madhya Pradesh Women, and she has worn jersey number 18 for India. She played her first domestic tournament in Gwalior and progressed through youth ranks, captaining the Madhya Pradesh U-16 side and later leading the U-19 team in ZCA and Challenger Trophy matches.
By 2020–21 she represented Madhya Pradesh Women in the Senior Challenger tournament. In 2022 she was part of the Madhya Pradesh U-19 squad that won the T20 domestic tournament. That same year she was selected for the India A women’s squad for a quadrangular series featuring India B, West Indies, and Sri Lanka; she was the only player from Madhya Pradesh in that group.
Soumya’s profile rose further when she was named vice-captain of India’s U-19 side for the inaugural Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. During the tournament she contributed with important cameos: she scored 28 off 15 balls against Sri Lanka and made 22 in the semi-final versus New Zealand. In the final against England, chasing a modest target, she scored 24 off 37 and was at the crease when India sealed the win, sharing a 46-run partnership with Gongadi Trisha and hitting the winning runs.
Public profile
Soumya stands at about 161 cm (5'3") and has black hair and black eyes. As of 2023 she was pursuing class 12 at St. Joseph’s Co-Ed School in Bhopal. Her favourite shot is the cover drive, and among cricketers she admires Virat Kohli and Smriti Mandhana; teammates have given her nicknames that reference Kohli. Away from cricket, she enjoys sketching, painting, and keeping a personal journal to record details of her on-field performances. She is also a fitness enthusiast who regularly trains at a home gym and typically warms up with a roughly 40-minute workout before practice.
Recognition and achievements
Soumya was part of the Indian squad that won the inaugural Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup on 29 January 2023 and played a role in several matches en route to the title. She received Madhya Pradesh’s Best Female Cricketer Award in 2022. Her progression through age-group and state teams—culminating in national-level selection and leadership roles—illustrates a steady climb through Indian women’s cricket pathways.

Those qualities, combined with early exposure to academy training and state-level competition, have underpinned her development as a young cricketer.
