Early life and background

Soundarya Rajinikanth was born on 20 September 1984 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She grew up in Chennai and completed her schooling at Ashram Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Velachery, a school founded by her mother. She trained in graphic design and holds a graduation in that field. Soundarya is the younger daughter of actor Rajinikanth and Latha Rangachari.

Career

Soundarya began her career in the Tamil film industry as a graphic designer. Her first credited work was creating the title sketch for the 1999 film Padayappa. Over the next decade she designed title sequences for major Tamil films, including Baba (2001), Chandramukhi (2005) and Sivaji (2007).

She founded Ocher Picture Productions and moved into film production. In 2007 her company signed an agreement with Warner Bros. Entertainment to collaborate on producing and distributing Tamil films. The first film produced by her company was the 2010 Tamil film Goa.

Soundarya later transitioned into directing. A planned 3D animated project titled Sultan: The Warrior featuring her father did not move forward, but she made her directorial debut with the 2014 film Kochadaiiyaan, a 3D animated feature that starred Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone. For that work she was recognized for technical innovation in film at the NDTV Indian of the Year Awards in 2014. She also appears briefly in Kochadaiiyaan in the song "Engae Pogudho Vaanam." That film made her the first Indian woman to direct her father in a feature film.

Her family includes her father Rajinikanth and mother Latha Rangachari. Her elder sister is film director Aishwarya R. Dhanush, who is married to actor Dhanush.
