Early life and background

Spencer Henry Johnson was born on 16 December 1995 in Adelaide, Australia. Raised in a sporting family, his father Greg played Australian rules football for South Broken Hill and West Adelaide, and his two older brothers also pursued rugby with West Adelaide. Johnson attended St Michael's College in Adelaide, graduating in 2013. His mother is of Italian origin, and Johnson holds Australian nationality with Italian ancestry from his maternal side.

As a youth he played multiple sports, including rugby for Flinders Park Football Club at underage levels, before choosing to focus on cricket. After finishing high school he worked as a pastry chef for a year, later co-running a home turf business with a brother and, in the period before his IPL selection, working as a landscape gardener to support himself.

Career

Johnson established himself in South Australian cricket pathways, representing South Australia Under-19 from 2013 and playing club cricket for West Torrens Cricket Club (West Eagles) from 2014. He featured in the West End Premier Cricket Competition in 2014–15 and earned a contract with South Australia (the Redbacks) ahead of the 2017–18 season, making his List A debut in the JLT One-Day Cup that season.

His early progress was interrupted by a stress fracture in the talus bone of his ankle, an injury that required multiple surgical procedures and a lengthy recovery. He returned to domestic cricket, appearing for South Australia Under-23 and the state Second XI before making his first-class debut in the 2022–23 Sheffield Shield season against Victoria.

Johnson bowls left-arm fast seam and has been recorded bowling consistently above 145 km/h, with a top speed around 150 km/h. He trained under former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie during his development and signed a contract extension with South Australia through 2026.

In domestic T20 leagues he has been involved with several franchises. He spent time with the Adelaide Strikers across two seasons (2020–21), made his Brisbane Heat debut in the 2022–23 Big Bash League on 11 January 2023, and wears jersey number 45 for Australia and for Brisbane Heat. Internationally, Johnson debuted in T20Is on 30 August 2023 against South Africa, taking two wickets for 33 runs, and made his ODI debut on 24 September 2023 against India.

His franchise appearances in 2023 included stints with Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (where he claimed two wickets in the inaugural season), Surrey Jaguars in GT20 Canada (seven wickets in six matches), and Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, where he impressed on debut by taking three wickets while conceding a single run in 20 deliveries. In the 2024 Indian Premier League auction he was bought by Gujarat Titans.
