Early life and background

Sri Siddheshwar Swami was born on 24 October 1941 in Bijjaragi, a village in what is now Vijayapura district, Karnataka. He grew up in a farming family and attended the local village school before continuing his studies at university. As a teenager he entered the monastic order under the guidance of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamiji, traveling with his guru while also pursuing formal education.

He completed undergraduate studies at Karnataka University, Dharwad, and went on to earn a Master of Arts in Philosophy from a university in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Those academic foundations informed both his teaching and his written work in later years.

Career

Siddheshwar Swami became the seer of Sri Jnanayogashrama in Vijayapura, an ashram he founded and where he spent the remainder of his life. The ashram followed and taught a synthesis of spiritual practices—Karma, Bhakti, Dhyana, and Jnana Yoga—and his discourses reflected that blend.

He was known for articulating ideas rooted in the Sharana tradition and the teachings of Basaveshwara, a medieval Lingayat social reformer, while also drawing on broader Indian religious thought. His public talks referenced the three classical Acharyas of Indian philosophy and engaged with themes across Buddhism, Jainism, and Sufism.

Siddheshwar Swami spoke and taught in several languages, delivering lectures in Kannada, Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, and English. He authored multiple books on spiritual topics, including studies and commentaries on the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and Sharana philosophy. Titles attributed to him include Siddhanta Shikhamani, Allamaprabhu’s Vachana Nirvachana, Bhagavad Chintana (Reflections of the Divine), and several English-language works such as God, World and Soul: Reflections on Saintly Sayings (Vachanas) and a volume on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

Public profile

Over the course of his life he became widely respected across Karnataka as a seer and scholar. He was popularly known by the honorific Nadedado Narayan, rendered in some accounts as the Walking God of North Karnataka. In 2018 the Government of India selected him for the Padma Shri, the nation’s fourth-highest civilian award; he declined the honour, stating that as a sanyasi he did not seek titles.

Devotees and followers frequented the ashram to hear his discourses and to receive guidance. He maintained a public presence through the ashram and was the subject of media coverage in regional and national outlets. On his passing, public figures and devotees expressed condolences and tributes.

Later years and death

In his later years Siddheshwar Swami continued to reside at Jnanayogashrama. He suffered a fall at one point that resulted in multiple fractures but later recovered. He died on 2 January 2023 at the ashram premises in Vijayapura, at the age of 81. Authorities and the ashram arranged for his last rites to be performed on the ashram grounds in accordance with wishes he had recorded earlier.

Latest updates

Following his death, his mortal remains were displayed at the ashram for devotees and subsequently moved to a nearby venue to allow the public to pay respects before final rites were performed. The state government announced that he would be accorded a state funeral. Social and official tributes marked his passing, reflecting his stature among followers and the wider community.
