Srihari Nataraj Biography
Srihari Nataraj is an Indian competitive swimmer from Bangalore who specializes in backstroke and freestyle. A national record-holder and multi-medalist at
Early life and backgroundSrihari Nataraj was born on 16 January 2001 in Bangalore, Karnataka. He grew up in a family with sporting roots — several relatives played cricket at various levels and his brother also took to swimming. Srihari first entered the water very young and competed for the first time at age five; that early experience helped set him on the path to a professional swimming career.
He attended schools in Bangalore, including Delhi Public School and Jain Heritage School, and later studied at Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College. Outside the pool he enjoys travelling, watching movies and casual games such as Jenga. He is known to be an animal lover and is frequently photographed with dogs.
Career
Srihari is a specialist in backstroke who also competes in freestyle events. He made his international debut at the 2015 Asian Age Group Swimming Championships, finishing in the top eight in medley and backstroke events. Over the following years he progressed through junior and senior ranks, collecting multiple national and regional titles.
At junior national level he emerged strongly in 2017, winning gold across backstroke distances and the 200m freestyle at the National Junior Aquatic Championships in Pune. That year he also set his first national mark at the same meet. In 2019 he delivered a standout performance at the Khelo India Youth Games, where he captured seven gold medals across individual and relay events.
Srihari has represented India at major multi-sport events including the 2018 Asian Games and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and he competed at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. He has also stood on the podium at regional championships: at the 2016 South Asian Aquatic Championships in Colombo he won multiple golds and a silver, and he continued to accumulate medals at national and international meets through 2021.
A significant milestone came at the Sette Colli meet in Rome on 1 July 2021, when Srihari achieved the FINA A qualifying time in the men’s 100m backstroke. That result made him the youngest Indian male swimmer to meet the direct Olympic qualifying standard, earning him selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021).
Srihari trains under coaches including AC Jayarajan and Nihar Ameen. His competitive program covers backstroke and freestyle across sprint and middle distances — 50m, 100m and 200m events — and he also swims relay legs in medley and freestyle relays. In 2021 he set the national record in the men’s 100m backstroke at the Sette Colli Trophy meet in Rome.
Public profile
Srihari’s achievements have been recognised at the state level: in November 2020 he received the Ekalavya Award from the Karnataka government for his performances in swimming. He maintains a presence online, running a YouTube channel under his name where he posts videos related to his swimming.
He follows personal rituals around competition: he prays before races, listens to music en route to the pool, and makes a point of thanking his coach immediately after finishing a race. Srihari counts Michael Phelps as his favourite swimmer and cites Milkha Singh among athletes he admires.
Sponsorships and endorsements include partnerships with Puma India, Fast&Up India and Meraki Connect, and he is seen promoting these brands on his social channels.
Latest updates
As of mid-2021 Srihari had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by hitting the FINA A standard in the 100m backstroke and held the Indian national record in that event. He continues to compete across backstroke and freestyle events and represents India at international competitions.
