Srijit Mukherji was born on 23 September 1977 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He grew up in the city and completed his schooling at Dolna Day School and South Point School. He went on to study economics, earning a B.Sc. from Presidency University and a master’s degree followed by an M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Before turning to full-time work in film and theatre, Mukherji worked as a social scientist in the urban transport and pollution sector with TERI in New Delhi. He later joined IRI Symphony and worked in Bangalore and Milan, but left the corporate track to pursue his interest in theatre and cinema.

Career

Mukherji’s early involvement with theatre in New Delhi and Bangalore laid the groundwork for his move into film and television. He began contributing to TV as a lyricist for the show Coffee & More in 2009 and wrote lyrics for the Bengali film Le Chakka in 2010.
