Early life and background

Srikanth Bolla was born on 7 July 1991 in Seetharamapuram near Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Raised in a farming family, he grew up in a rural community and attended Devnar School for the Blind in Hyderabad before moving on to Royal Junior College. From a young age he learned Braille and later developed skills in English and computer use that helped shape his academic and professional path.

School years brought both challenges and achievements. Despite social exclusion at times, he persisted in education and excelled in his Class 12 board examinations, earning very high marks. As a youth he took part in sports adapted for visually impaired players, including blind cricket and chess, and represented the state in competitions. He also participated in national youth programs and in 2006 was among the students addressed by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Education and early initiatives

After school Srikanth sought higher education abroad and joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009, becoming the first international blind student to study Management Science there. While at MIT he combined academics with community service, sports and research work, including a role as an undergraduate research assistant. He completed internships with organizations such as GE India Innovation Centre and Infosys, gaining exposure to design, team building and corporate practice.

During his college years he launched community-focused efforts: he founded a short computer-training initiative supported by MIT’s Public Service Center and in 2011 co-founded the Samanvai Center for Children with Multiple Disabilities, which included a Braille printing press and provided education, job training and rehabilitation services aimed at economic independence for students with disabilities.

Career

On returning to India in 2012, Srikanth established Bollant Industries, a company focused on sustainable manufacturing and inclusive employment. Bollant’s product range includes recycled kraft paper made from municipal and soiled paper, paper-based packaging and disposable products from natural leaf and recycled paper, as well as recycling of waste plastics into usable items. The business operates multiple plants across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Sri City and exports a portion of its output to markets such as the United States, Australia and Germany.

Bollant was built with support from a group of investors and mentors, and over time has created hundreds of jobs, with a substantial portion of the workforce drawn from people with disabilities. Srikanth has described employment generation and mentorship for those with disabilities as central motivations for the enterprise. He also serves as director of Surge Impact Foundation, an organization founded in 2016 that works with institutions and communities toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in India.
