Early life and background

Yaramala Srinivasa Reddy was born on 23 November 1973 in Khammam (then in Andhra Pradesh, now in Telangana). Raised in a family with a government-employed father, Reddy attended National High School and Shirisha Vidya Niketan High School in Telangana. He is married to Swathi Srinivas Reddy and they have two daughters, Akruthi and Aasrithi. Reddy is known to be an avid dog lover.

Career

Reddy began his career in front of audiences as a television anchor before moving into acting. His film debut came with the Telugu film Ishtam (2001). Early in his career he accepted small parts that gave him on-set experience; over time he gravitated toward comic roles as a practical route to greater recognition.

Not long after Ishtam, Reddy appeared in the commercially successful Idiot (2002) and made his television acting debut with the popular Telugu show Amrutham in 2002, appearing in various episodic parts. A notable film role followed in Venky (2004), where his portrayal of Suri Babu won audience appreciation.

Reddy’s first Tamil release was Naan Ee (2012), which was simultaneously made in Telugu as Eega. He took on his first lead role in the Telugu feature Geethanjali (2014). In 2018 he played the lead character Varun in Jamba Lakidi Pamba, a film he also co-produced; his daughter Aasrithi appeared in the film as an infant. That year he also made a special appearance on the reality show Bigg Boss Telugu Season 2.

Expanding his work behind the camera, Reddy served as actor, director and co-producer on Bhagyanagara Veedullo Gamattu (2019); his performance as Srinu drew positive audience response. Across his career he has appeared in many Telugu films including Roommates (2006), Ready (2008), Rama Rama Krishna Krishna (2010), Attarintiki Daredi (2013), Anando Brahma (2017), Mugguru Monagallu (2021) and Waltair Veerayya (2023).

Reddy has spoken about the patience required to establish himself in films, describing how it took years of effort and numerous chances before achieving lasting recognition. He has also explained that choosing comedic parts helped him stand out to audiences when larger dramatic opportunities were limited.

Public profile

Reddy is primarily associated with comic roles in Telugu cinema but has diversified into lead parts, direction and production. In September 2023 he received the South Indian International Movie Award (SIIMA) for Best Comedian (Telugu) for his work in Karthikeya 2, presented at the awards ceremony in Dubai.

He maintains an Instagram presence under his full name, Yaramala Srinivasa Reddy. Public reports note a brief 2018 episode of controversy involving fellow actor Jr. NTR following the latter’s accident; Reddy publicly shared a photograph with Jr. NTR from the sets of Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava that year.

Recent on-screen credits include a role in Waltair Veerayya (2023). His SIIMA award in 2023 marked a notable recognition for his longstanding contribution to comedy in Telugu films.
