Early life and backgroundSriram Krishnan was born on September 13, 1985, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He grew up in a middle-class family in the city and completed his schooling at Sir M Venkatasubba Rao Matriculation Higher Secondary School in T. Nagar. He went on to study information technology at SRM Engineering College, affiliated with Anna University, where he earned a BTech degree between 2001 and 2005.
Krishnan’s interest in computers developed relatively late compared with some peers. A free introductory course during his final years of school opened the door to programming and computing, and he quickly became dedicated to learning more. After finishing his entrance exams, his father bought him a personal computer, which Krishnan used to teach himself coding during the holidays.
Career
After graduating, Krishnan moved to the United States and began his professional career in the technology industry. His early corporate experience included a role at Microsoft beginning in 2005, where he worked as a program manager for Visual Studio and contributed to APIs and services for what became the Windows Azure division. He left Microsoft in May 2011.
Krishnan’s subsequent roles placed him at several prominent technology companies. He worked as a product manager at Yahoo! for a period and later joined Facebook (now Meta) in 2013 as a program manager, where he contributed to mobile advertising products and efforts around the Facebook Audience Network. He moved on to Snap Inc., taking on managerial responsibilities tied to revenue products and monetization.
From 2017 to 2019, Krishnan served at Twitter as senior director of products. His remit there included work on the core user experience: redesigning the home page, improving the primary timeline, and contributing to search and audience growth initiatives.
Alongside his operating roles, Krishnan has been active as an investor and advisor. Since January 2017 he has advised or invested in companies such as Figma, Notion, Cameo, Coda, VSCO, Scale.ai, SpaceX, CRED, and Khatabook. In 2021 he became a general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, where he is involved in broader investment activity; the firm has been a backer of companies including Clubhouse.
In 2022 Krishnan joined a team working with Elon Musk on efforts to revamp Twitter following Musk’s acquisition of the company. He described the engagement as a temporary contribution to the platform’s rework.
Public profile
Krishnan has cultivated a public presence beyond his day jobs. Along with his wife, Aarthi Ramamurthy, he launched The Good Time Show on Clubhouse in 2021 as a pandemic-era project. The show featured conversations about technology and crypto and brought high-profile guests to the discussion; it later moved from Clubhouse to YouTube.
He serves on the boards of multiple companies in the crypto and events space, including Bitski, Hopin, and Polywork. He is known to collect typewriters and shoes, and he enjoys reading in his spare time.
Personal life
Sriram Krishnan is married to entrepreneur and host Aarthi Ramamurthy. The couple met while studying at SRM Engineering College; they first connected in a Yahoo! chatroom for a coding project before meeting in person and later marrying on September 6, 2010. The couple have two children: a daughter born in 2019 and a son born in 2022.
Latest updates
Krishnan continues to split his time between investing, advising and product work. His move into a general partner role at Andreessen Horowitz marked a shift toward venture investing, and his participation in the 2022 Twitter project was presented as a temporary advisory and hands-on contribution. He and his wife remain active creators and hosts through their podcast and video work.
