Early life and background

Sruthy Sithara was born on 6 May 1996 in Vaikom, Kottayam, Kerala. Raised in a family headed by her father Pavithran, she lost her mother in 2015 and has at least one brother. She attended Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Kottayam for several years and spent a year studying in the Navodaya Vidyalaya system in Uttar Pradesh while in class nine. Those school years included instances of bullying that affected her mental health and required intervention from school faculty.

Sruthy pursued higher education with a focus on commerce and professional studies. Her academic record includes a Bachelor of Commerce and studies in company secretaryship at the Institute of Company Secretaries of India in New Delhi. She became the first transgender person known to enroll at that institute.

Career

After completing her studies, Sruthy began working at a firm for two years. She later became one of four transgender people in Kerala to receive a government position, serving as a Project Assistant at the Transgender cell under the Directorate of Social Justice from 2018 to 2019. Around that period she revealed her gender identity to her father and completed a full-body transition in 2018.

Sruthy’s public profile grew through participation in transgender beauty pageants. She was first runner-up in Miss Chamayam in 2017 and in June 2018 was crowned Queen of Dhwayah at the Kochi pageant’s second edition. Her pageant trajectory reached a milestone on 1 December 2021 when she was crowned Miss Trans Global in an online ceremony, becoming the first Indian to win that international title. At the same event she also received the Most Eloquent Queen award.

Beyond pageantry, Sruthy combines modeling with activism and artistic ambitions. She helped launch an online campaign called The Kaleidoscope in 2021 to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In interviews she has expressed aspirations toward the Indian Civil Services and said she took the UPSC exam in 2018 under her male identity because the form then lacked a transgender category; she continues to prepare for future attempts. She has also spoken of plans to pursue acting and indicated she was set to appear in Malayalam films.

Public profile

Sruthy has been open about the challenges she faced growing up, describing repeated teasing and hurtful comments tied to her effeminate mannerisms and the broader stigmas confronting transgender people. She has credited meeting others in the transgender community during college with helping her embrace her identity. After winning Miss Trans Global, she dedicated the title to her late mother and to a friend who was Kerala’s first transgender radio jockey.

Her win received attention from public figures, including congratulations from Kerala’s minister of higher education. Sruthy has used interviews and social media posts to frame her pageant success as a platform for visibility and dignity for transgender people, saying the title could help inspire others to live with pride and self-respect.

Latest updates

In addition to carrying forward advocacy through The Kaleidoscope, Sruthy continues to prepare for competitive public service exams with the goal of becoming an Indian Administrative Service officer. She has also indicated a desire to work in film and was reported as preparing to feature in Malayalam movies.

Sruthy remains unmarried and is widely described as a model and artist who balances creative work with public-service ambitions and community advocacy. Her journey from local pageants to an international title has made her a notable figure in India’s transgender visibility movement.
