Early life and background
Steffan Nero was born in 1999 and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. Diagnosed at birth with congenital nystagmus, his vision has fluctuated over time; he has described periods in childhood when he was effectively unable to see. Nero attended the University of Notre Dame Australia, where his studies included a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Behavioural Science.

Family and formative years
Nero is the son of Leo and Anna Nero and has a sister named TJ. As a child he played sport alongside his father and with local, able-bodied peers. He has said that sport has been central to his identity, giving him a network of support and opportunity.

Career
Nero’s athletic pathway began in mainstream football, then moved into adapted sports including blind cricket and goalball as his sight changed. He developed an interest in goalball around age twelve and later represented Australia at national goalball events. In 2016 he was recognised as the top player and highest goal scorer at the Australian National Goalball Championship in Sydney.

Cricket has been a major focus of Nero’s sporting life. He made his T20 international debut for Australia’s visually impaired side on 31 January 2017 against Nepal and earned selection for the Australian blind cricket squad for the 2017 Blind T20 World Cup, becoming the youngest member of that team. That same year he scored his first century representing Western Australia at the National Cricket Inclusion Championships. He also received a Youth Sports scholarship in 2017 for his achievements in cricket and goalball.

Nero continued to feature in national teams across adapted sports. In 2016 he was chosen for an Australia A cricket team when he was seventeen. In 2019 he was selected for the Australian visually impaired futsal team for a tour to England. In May 2022 he was named in Australia’s squad for the International Cricket Inclusion Series against New Zealand.

His innings included 49 fours and one six and established the highest individual score recorded in blind cricket. It capped a prolific run of form at that series, following earlier centuries of 113 (46) and 101 not out (47).

Honours and recognition
