Early life and background

Stephen Laurel Boss, widely known by his stage name tWitch, was born on September 29, 1982, in Montgomery, Alabama. Raised in his hometown, he attended Lee High School before pursuing dance studies at Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Alabama, and later at Chapman University in Orange, California. From an early age he was drawn to performance, crediting watching Michael Jackson as a formative influence on his decision to pursue dance.

Career

tWitch’s professional life began in competitive and reality television. He was a semifinalist on The Wade Robson Project and later found national attention through the television dance competition So You Think You Can Dance. After an initial appearance in season 3 where he did not reach the top 20, he returned the following season and emerged as a runner-up. That season included a contemporary routine choreographed by Mia Michaels that earned widespread recognition.

In the years that followed, Boss remained closely associated with So You Think You Can Dance, appearing as an All-Star dancer in 2011, 2012 and 2013, captaining Team Street in 2015, and serving as a judge in 2018 and 2022. He also took part in other dance-focused programming and competitions, and he placed second on Star Search in 2003.

tWitch expanded into choreography, working with international artists and training performers for the South Korean pop scene. He performed with troupes such as Breed OCLA and Chill Factor Crew, and undertook choreography and coaching roles for artists connected to YG Entertainment, including work with the group Big Bang.

Boss moved into film and television acting while maintaining his dance career. His early film appearance was as an uncredited dancer in Blades of Glory (2007). He also danced and acted in the Step Up franchise, appearing in Step Up 3D (2010), Step Up Revolution (2012), and Step Up: All In (2014). His screen credits include roles in Magic Mike XXL (2015) and television appearances on series such as Bones (2010), Drop Dead Diva (2012), Love (2016), and Modern Family (2018). His last listed film role was in The Hip Hop Nutcracker (2022), in which he played the character Dad.

From 2014 through 2022, Boss was a prominent presence on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He joined that program as a DJ and guest host, later serving as an executive producer and appearing regularly as a contributor and sidekick on associated projects such as Ellen’s Game of Games. In 2017 he and his wife began co-hosting Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings, a documentary series about Disney-themed nuptials that aired on Freeform and Disney+.

Outside of performance, Boss founded a clothing line called tWitch Boss Clothing.

Public profile

Standing approximately 183 cm (6 feet) tall, Boss was known for his striking stage presence and athletic form. He had black eyes and kept his head shaved. Personal details that formed part of his public persona included a love of comic books—especially Superman—and the story behind his nickname: he adopted tWitch in his early twenties, a period when he was traveling frequently to teach and choreograph, sometimes developing routines in his car. Family and personal life

Stephen Boss married fellow dancer and choreographer Allison Holker on December 11, 2013. The couple met in 2010 and worked together professionally before marrying.
