Stockton Rush Biography

Stockton Rush was an American engineer, pilot and businessman best known as the co‑founder and CEO of OceanGate. He built his career around aviation andsub

Early life and background
Richard Stockton Rush III was born on March 31, 1962, in San Francisco, California. Raised in a family with deep ties to the city, he grew up amid a tradition of business and philanthropy. His maternal grandparents were prominent in local civic life, and his family lineage included historical figures active during the American Revolution.

Rush attended Phillips Exeter Academy before studying aerospace engineering at Princeton University. He went on to earn an MBA from the University of California. From an early age he pursued flight: he obtained a commercial pilot’s license at 18 and later earned a DC‑8 Type/Captain rating through United Airlines’ training program. Poor eyesight kept him from a military pilot career, but he found work as a flight test engineer at McDonnell Douglas on programs that included the F‑15 Eagle.

Career
Stockton Rush combined technical training and entrepreneurial ambition over the course of his career. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, he worked in aerospace and then turned his attention to submersible design and underwater exploration. In 2006 he built a small submersible to explore Puget Sound, using parts purchased from a private firm and plans provided by a retired U.S. Navy submarine commander. That initial craft, about 12 feet long and rated for shallow dives, represented the start of his shift toward commercial submersibles.

In 2009 Rush co‑founded OceanGate Inc. with Guillermo Söhnlein. OceanGate was created with the goal of using commercial tourism to help fund the development of deeper‑diving manned submersibles capable of supporting scientific work, resource projects and other commercial activities. In support of those aims, Rush launched the OceanGate Foundation in 2012, a nonprofit focused on advancing technology and supporting marine science, history and underwater archaeology.

Rush continued to participate in field science and exploration. In 2018 he joined a scientific expedition to the San Juan Islands to study sea urchins and habitat changes affecting local forage fish. In 2022 he took part in a descent to view the wreckage of the RMS Titanic; that expedition encountered technical problems that affected the pilot’s control during the dive.

Public profile
Rush spoke frequently about adventure, risk and his belief that commercial submersible tourism could open new avenues for research and funding. He described deep‑diving submersible trips as transformative experiences and framed OceanGate’s mission around combining exploration, technology and commercial opportunity. He also expressed personal ambitions about space exploration and had once said he aspired to go to Mars.

He served on the board of other technology companies, including a director role at BlueView Technologies in Washington. OceanGate’s expeditions drew public attention as the field of underwater tourism and deep‑sea exploration expanded; by 2021, chartered submersible expeditions were being reported at high price points for individual participants.

Personal life
Rush married Wendy Weil Rush in 1986. Wendy served as director of communications at OceanGate and is a licensed pilot. The couple lived in the Pacific Northwest, where Rush pursued his work in aviation and submersible development. He is survived by two children. His father, Richard Stockton Rush Jr., chaired regional oil and real estate companies; his mother was Ellen Rush. He had four older siblings, including sisters named Deborah and Catherine.

Death
On June 18, 2023, the OceanGate submersible Titan went missing in the North Atlantic during a voyage to view the Titanic wreck, about 400 nautical miles off Newfoundland. The vessel carried five people, including Rush, and the United States military joined the search. On June 22, 2023, authorities announced that the submersible had suffered an implosion during its descent, resulting in the immediate loss of all those on board. Rush was 61 at the time of his death.

Latest updates
Beyond OceanGate’s ongoing activities prior to the accident, Rush’s final years were defined by efforts to expand commercial access to deep‑sea exploration and to develop submersible technology through both his company and its foundation.
