Early life and backgroundStuart Terence Roger Binny was born on 3 June 1984 in Bangalore, Karnataka. Cricket ran in his family: his father, Roger Binny, played for India and also served as a coach during Stuart's formative years. Stuart attended schools in Bangalore, including The Frank Anthony Public School and St. Joseph's Indian High School. He grew up in Bengaluru and developed interests outside cricket such as photography and travelling.
Career
Binny emerged as a useful all-round cricketer who represented several domestic and franchise teams. At the domestic and IPL level he turned out for teams including Karnataka, Hyderabad Heroes, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He wore the number 84 jersey for India and for some of his IPL sides.
Before breaking into mainstream Indian cricket, Binny featured in the Indian Cricket League, where his performances as an all-rounder — including scoring runs and taking wickets — helped raise his profile. The BCCI later brought him into the Indian Premier League when Mumbai Indians signed him for the inaugural IPL season.
Binny made his international debut in One Day Internationals on 28 January 2014 against New Zealand in Hamilton. He played his first Test match on 9 July 2014 against England in Nottingham and made his T20 International debut on 17 July 2015 against Zimbabwe in Harare.
One of the standout moments of his international career came in June 2014 against Bangladesh, when he produced an exceptional bowling performance, taking six wickets while conceding just four runs in an ODI. That display is recorded among the best bowling figures by an Indian in the 50-over format.
At the IPL level, Binny had notable contributions with both bat and ball. In May 2013 he played an unbeaten cameo of 32 off 13 balls to steer Rajasthan Royals to victory over Pune Warriors India. Ahead of the 2016 season, Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired him at his base price.
Throughout his career he experienced the highs and lows that come with franchise cricket; for example, in August 2016 he bowled an over that leaked 32 runs, an over that included several sixes and extras.
Binny announced his retirement from first-class and international cricket on 30 August 2021, bringing an end to his professional playing career for India.
Public profile
Physically, Binny stands around 175 cm (about 5'9"). He is a right-handed batter and an all-rounder who bowled medium pace. His eyes and hair are described as black. He is married to sports presenter Mayanti Langer. His family includes his father, Roger Binny, and his mother, Cynthia.
