Penmatsa Subbaraju was born on 27 February 1977 in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh. Raised in a middle-class family, he completed a B.Sc. in Mathematics at D. N. R. College, Bhimavaram. After graduation he studied computer courses and worked as a computer engineer for Dell in Hyderabad before entering the film industry.

Career

Subbaraju’s move into acting came unexpectedly. While attending to computer work for an assistant to filmmaker Krishna Vamsi, he was noticed and offered a small part. His on-screen debut came in the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003), where he appeared as a negative lead. He later featured in the Tamil remake M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi, a project that brought him wider recognition.

Over the years Subbaraju built a steady career as a character actor across South Indian cinema. His filmography includes notable Telugu titles such as Arya, Subash Chandra Bose, Yogi, Neninthe, Pokiri, Dookudu — in which he portrayed a mute character — and Geetha Govindam.
