Subedar Sanjay Kumar Biography
Subedar Sanjay Kumar is a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army and a Param Vir Chakra recipient for conspicuous bravery during the 1999 KargilWar
Early life and backgroundSanjay Kumar was born on 3 March 1976 in Kalol Bakain, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. He comes from a family with a military connection: an uncle who served with the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was killed in the 1965 Indo-Pak war, and two of his brothers later served with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Kumar completed schooling up to the 10th standard at Government Senior Secondary School in Kalol, Bilaspur. Before joining the Army, he worked as a taxi driver in Bilaspur. His initial attempts to enlist were unsuccessful; he applied twice and was rejected before finally being accepted in 1996.
Career
Kumar enlisted in the Indian Army in 1996 and was posted to the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK RIF). During the 1999 Kargil conflict he was a rifleman assigned to operations in the Mushkoh valley. On 4 July 1999 he volunteered as the leading scout for an assault on Area Flat Top on Point 4875, a position occupied by enemy forces.
When automatic enemy fire stalled the attacking column, Kumar moved forward alone. In close-quarters fighting he was wounded multiple times but continued his assault, engaging and killing several enemy combatants in hand-to-hand encounters and seizing an enemy universal machine gun. His actions surprised and demoralized the defenders, enabling his platoon to press the attack and capture the position.
For his bravery in that action, Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award for wartime valour. He received the decoration when he was 23 years old, one of a small number of soldiers to be so honoured since the award’s inception.
In the years after Kargil, Kumar’s service record included changes in rank. Reports indicate a demotion in 2010 followed by a later promotion to Naib Subedar, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) rank. On 19 July 2014 he was promoted to Naib Subedar and subsequently posted to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, where he took on responsibilities teaching officer cadets and trainees.
Public profile
Kumar’s Kargil action has been recorded in his battalion’s diary and has been publicly recognized on national platforms. He has appeared on television programs honoring military service; notable appearances include a Republic TV special on Independence Day 2018 and a guest slot on the Karam Veer episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati’s 12th season finale in January 2021, alongside fellow Param Vir Chakra recipient Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav.
Personal life
Sanjay Kumar is married to Promila; the couple wed on 17 April 2000. They have two children: a son named Neeraj and a daughter whose name is not recorded in the available material. His parents are Durga Ram and Bhag Devi, and he is one of several siblings, with two elder brothers and three elder sisters.
Latest updates
As of the most recent available information, Kumar continues in service with the Indian Army. After his 2014 promotion he served at the Indian Military Academy, contributing to the training of new officers and trainees. He is listed with service number 13760533 and has served from 1996 to the present according to the record provided.
Kumar’s story is often recounted alongside other Kargil heroes; he, Captain Vikram Batra, and Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav are among the small group of soldiers awarded the Param Vir Chakra for actions during that conflict. His conduct during the assault on Point 4875 remains the defining episode of his public reputation.
