Early life and backgroundTanaji Malusare was born around the year 1600 in the village of Godavli in Javali Taluka, Satara, Maharashtra. He belonged to the Maratha caste and grew up in a family that included his father, Sardar Kaloji, his mother Parvatibai, and at least one brother, Sardar Suryaji. He married Savitri Malusare and had a son named Rayaba Malusare.
Career
Tanaji rose to prominence as a military leader in the service of the Maratha Empire. Known as Subedar Taanaji Malusare in some records, he earned a reputation for bravery and skill in battle. He served directly under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and took part in multiple campaigns on behalf of the emerging Maratha state.
Tanaji’s most famous action came in 1670 during the campaign to retake a strategically important hill fortress near Pune. The fort, known at the time as Kondana and later renamed Sinhagad, had been ceded to Mughal forces under terms of the Treaty of Purandar. Its capture by the Mughals and command by Udaybhan Rathod, a Rajput officer appointed by the Mughal commander Jai Singh I, was a matter of deep concern for Shivaji and his supporters.
Despite personal commitments at home, Tanaji accepted Shivaji’s summons to lead the operation. He assembled a detachment of roughly 300 men and attempted to scale the steep western face of the fort. After two unsuccessful tries, reports describe how Tanaji persevered and gained access to the fortress, enabling his forces to open the Kalyan Darwaza and launch an assault on the Mughal garrison. He was supported in the engagement by another force of about 500 troops under the command of his younger brother Suryaji.
During fierce hand-to-hand combat with Udaybhan’s defenders, Tanaji fought with notable ferocity. Contemporary accounts describe how his shield was broken in the fighting and how he continued to defend himself by wrapping an upper garment around his arm. The fort was ultimately seized by Tanaji’s forces, but he sustained grave wounds during the battle and died on the field in 1670, at around 70 years of age.
Public profile
Tanaji’s death had a profound effect on Shivaji. The ruler is famously recorded as lamenting the loss with the words that translate to, "The fort is won, but the lion is lost." In honor of Tanaji’s sacrifice, Shivaji renamed Kondana as Sinhagad, literally "Lion's Fort," ensuring that Tanaji’s role in the achievement would be remembered by future generations.
Over time Tanaji Malusare has been celebrated as a legendary Maratha warrior whose courage and leadership exemplified the martial spirit of Shivaji’s followers. Stories of the assault on the fort—sometimes embellished in retellings—emphasize his determination, the daring scaling of the fort’s slopes, and the pivotal role his actions played in its capture.
