Subhash Ghai Biography
Subhash Ghai is an Indian filmmaker, producer and mentor whose career spans acting, directing and producing. Nicknamed the 'Showman' and 'Dream Merchant',G
Early life and backgroundSubhash Ghai was born on 24 January 1945 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He grew up in a Punjabi Khatri family and completed his schooling in Delhi before graduating in commerce from Rohtak, Haryana. After his college education he moved to Pune to study at the Film and Television Institute of India, preparing for a career in cinema.
Career
Ghai began his association with the Hindi film industry as an actor, appearing in small parts in the late 1960s and early 1970s including roles in Taqdeer (1967) and Aradhana (1971). He played lead parts in films such as Umang and Gumraah before shifting behind the camera. His debut as a director came with Kalicharan (1976), and in 1982 he launched his production banner Mukta Arts.
Across the 1980s and 1990s Ghai established himself as a hit director-producer, working with established stars and introducing new faces. He directed Dilip Kumar in several high-profile films including Vidhaata (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991), and he won the Filmfare Best Director Award for Saudagar. He played a notable role in launching or boosting careers: giving Jackie Shroff a lead role in Hero (1983), working with Anil Kapoor on multiple films, and introducing actors who went on to become prominent names in the industry.
Ghai’s films from this period included commercially successful and often large-scale productions. In 1993 two songs from his film Khalnayak drew wide attention for their lyrics. He also directed internationally released titles such as Pardes and Taal, which helped the films reach audiences beyond India.
In addition to directing and producing Hindi movies, Ghai has produced regional films across languages and has been involved in short films and large-scale stage presentations. In 1991 he organized a major visual stage show called CINEMA CINEMA to mark 100 years of world cinema.
After a period of diminished box-office returns around the early 2000s, Ghai scaled back from directing and moved into producing. Under his banner he produced films including Aitraaz (2004), Iqbal (2005), 36 China Town (2006) and Apna Sapna Money Money (2006). He returned to direction with projects released in 2008.
