Early life and background

Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was born on 22 September 1962 in Sindri, Dhanbad, in what is now Jharkhand. He grew up in Sindri and completed his schooling at the CMRI branch of De Nobili in Digwadih, Dhanbad in 1978. He went on to study at DAV College, Chandigarh and later attended the University Business School at Panjab University, earning a B.A. in English and an MBA.

Career

Jaiswal joined the Indian Police Service in the 1985 batch and was allocated to the Maharashtra cadre. Early in his policing career he served as Additional Superintendent of Police in Amravati in 1986. Over subsequent decades he led or served in a number of specialised policing and intelligence assignments.

He headed a Special Investigation Team set up by a high court in 2003 to probe a large fake stamp paper scam; that investigation was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. In 2006 he was appointed head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad to investigate the Malegaon blast case. His service record also includes postings with the Special Protection Group, the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing.

Jaiswal rose to senior leadership in Maharashtra policing, serving as Mumbai Police Commissioner in 2018 and then as the state’s Director General of Police in 2019. Following those roles, he assumed national-level leadership when he was appointed Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation on 25 May 2021. The appointment followed a selection process in which three candidates were shortlisted and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his two-year tenure from the date he took charge.

Jaiswal has been recognised for his service with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, awarded in 2009.
