Subramanian Swamy was born on 15 September 1939 in Mylapore, then part of the Madras Presidency. He grew up in Chennai (formerly Madras) and holds Indian nationality. Swamy completed undergraduate and master’s level studies in mathematical and statistical subjects and went on to earn a doctorate in economics from Harvard University.

Career
Swamy’s professional life spans academia, public service and active politics. After finishing his PhD at Harvard in 1965 he joined the university faculty as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1969. While pursuing his doctorate, he spent time at the United Nations Secretariat in New York and was supervised for his thesis by economist Simon Kuznets.

Returning to India, Swamy taught mathematical economics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He later served on IIT Delhi’s Board of Governors and on the Council of IITs. Swamy remained connected with Harvard through summer teaching engagements that continued into the 2010s.

In politics, Swamy became involved in Sarvodaya activities that were part of the groundwork for the Janata Party. He was a founding member of Janata Dal during the period of India’s Emergency. Between 1974 and 1999 he was elected to Parliament five times. In the early 1990s he served on the Planning Commission and held cabinet responsibilities as Commerce and Law Minister during 1990–91. From 1994 to 1996 he chaired the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade.

Swamy led the Janata Party as its president until 2013, after which he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party while Rajnath Singh was party president. In 2016 he was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the President of India.
