Early life and backgroundSuchi Mukherjee was born on 6 July 1973 in Haryana and grew up with a strong emphasis on independence. Her family home is in New Delhi. From an early age she developed interests in economics and finance, influenced in part by reading the Financial Times. She studied at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi before continuing her education abroad at the University of Cambridge (1994–1996) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (1997–1998). Her academic credentials include a B.A. (Honors) in Economics and an M.Sc. in Finance and Economics.
During her academic career she received several distinctions: she was the first Indian recipient of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship in 1994, a Chadburn scholar, a British Chevening scholar at LSE, and she holds a university record in development economics. After returning to India she taught Development Economics to third-year students at St. Stephen’s, a stint that made her one of the youngest lecturers at the college.
Career
Suchi Mukherjee began her professional life in corporate finance, working at Lehman Brothers in 1998 as a senior associate. Over the next decade and more she moved into leadership roles across technology and classifieds businesses. In 2012 Mukherjee co-founded LimeRoad with partners Ankush Mehra and Prashant Malik. LimeRoad was created as an online marketplace focused on women’s fashion while supporting local retailers. The idea for the business emerged shortly after Mukherjee’s second child was born when she found herself unable to locate a piece of jewelry she had seen in a magazine—an experience that highlighted the gap she wanted the company to fill. Prashant Malik later sold his shares, while Ankush Mehra remained associated with A.M. Marketplaces Pvt. Ltd., the parent company of LimeRoad.
Under Mukherjee’s leadership LimeRoad has attracted attention beyond the startup community. Actress Neha Dhupia joined the company in 2014 as Art Director, holds a stake in the business, and receives a monthly salary for her role.
