Early life and background

Sudha Chandran was born on 21 September 1964 in Kannur, Kerala, and grew up to pursue classical dance from a very young age. She began learning dance when she was about three and a half years old and later moved to Mumbai, which she counts as her hometown. Chandran completed her college education at Mithibai College, Mumbai, and holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics.

A pivotal event in her teenage years changed the course of her life. At 17 she was involved in a serious road accident that led to the loss of a leg due to gangrene. Over the following three years she underwent physiotherapy and adapted to a prosthetic limb, often identified as a Jaipur foot, which enabled her to return to public performance and professional life.

Career

Chandran rebuilt her professional life around dance and acting. Her comeback performance in Mumbai on 28 January 1984 re-established her reputation, leading to invitations to perform across India and internationally. She is regarded among India’s notable Bharatnatyam dancers and later formed the Sudha Chandran Academy of Dance, which operates branches in Mumbai and Pune.

Her screen career began with the Telugu biographical film Mayuri, which depicted her life story and brought her widespread recognition. For that performance she received the National Film Award – Special Jury Award. She made her television debut in the late 1980s and has since been seen in prominent roles, including Ramola Sikand in the television serial Kaahin Kissii Roz and Yamini Raheja in the Naagin series. Alongside performing, Chandran has taken on leadership roles related to disability advocacy; she serves as vice-chairperson of the National Association of Disabled Enterprises (NADE).
