Sudipto Sen (Director) Biography

Indian writer-director from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, known for documentary and feature films including The Kerala Story (2023). Educated in physics andappl

Early life and background

Sudipto Sen was born on 16 January in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. He grew up in the region and attended Jalpaiguri Zilla School for part of his schooling before moving to Kolkata, where he studied at BT Road Government School. He completed undergraduate studies in physics and later earned a master’s degree in applied psychology from the University of Calcutta.

Career

Sen’s filmmaking career spans documentaries, short films and features across multiple languages. His earliest credited work is the 1997 documentary The Other Wealth, which brought him international recognition. Through the late 1990s and 2000s he continued directing documentaries and independent films, including Land Within Ripples (1998) and the English feature The Last Monk (2006). The Last Monk played at major festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2006.

Sen has worked in a variety of regional and bilingual projects: Akhnoor (a Hindi/French short, 2007), the Malayalam feature Anthiponnovettam (2008), and later films such as Lucknow Times (2015), Aasma (2018), Guru Ji: Ahead of Time (2018), Gurujana (2022) and The Kerala Story (2023). He has also directed commercials, including an advertisement for Shell featuring the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

His documentary and short-film work has been recognised at a number of festivals. Early awards include the Global 500 Role of Honor Award for The Other Wealth (1997) and festival prizes for Akhnoor in 2007, including Best Film and Best Director honours from international juries. The Last Monk earned him a Best Cinematography acknowledgement at the Cine International Film Festival, and later non-feature work such as Guru Ji: Ahead of Time received a National Film Award for Best Music Direction (Non-feature film). In 2018 Sen’s In the Name of Love won a Best Film prize at the London Independent Film Awards. In 2025 he was named Best Direction at the 71st National Film Awards for The Kerala Story.

Sen’s involvement with film institutions includes serving as an empanelled producer for the World Bank from 1998 to 2002 and participating in the jury at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in November 2022, where he was selected as the only Indian jury member that year.

Public profile

Sen’s films and public statements have drawn significant attention and, at times, controversy. A 2018 screening of his documentary In The Name of Love — Melancholy of God’s Own Country at Jawaharlal Nehru University became the centre of a heated confrontation; he has said he was physically assaulted during that event. The Kerala Story, released in trailer form in November 2022 and produced as a Hindi feature in 2023, generated public debate and a legal complaint alleging the film promoted enmity between religious groups. The film’s stated subject matter and the claims presented in its promotional material were challenged by critics and prompted a police case under provisions of the Indian penal code related to communal harmony.

Sen has spoken publicly in defence of his work and about the research and documents that informed his films. He has also commented on festival matters, voicing disapproval when he considered the conduct of peers to be out of professional etiquette, as he did following remarks at the closing ceremony of the 53rd International Film Festival of India.

Personal life

Sen is Indian by nationality and of Bengali ethnicity. Publicly available profiles list interests such as cooking and travel. He has worked with Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Arts & Aesthetics as a member of the Education Council. He is described as non-vegetarian and his appearance is noted with black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair; his height is listed as approximately 161 cm (5 ft 3 in).

Latest updates

Recent years have seen Sen active with feature releases and festival involvement. Gurujana was selected for the Indian Panorama section of the 53rd International Film Festival of India in 2022. He released the trailer for The Kerala Story in November 2022 and the film is cited as a 2023 release; for this film he received a Best Direction award at the 71st National Film Awards in 2025.
