Early life and backgroundSuhail Chandhok was born on 7 December 1987 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family with a strong motorsport and sporting background; his father, Vicky Chandhok, is a multiple Indian rallying champion and has held leadership roles in Asian motorsport, and his brother Karun Chandhok has competed in single-seater racing at high levels. Suhail attended Sishya School in Chennai and later moved to Australia to study at the University of Adelaide, where he completed a double major degree in Management and Marketing (Commerce).
He developed an early interest in sports, participating in school-level cricket and football. While he admired cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, his sporting influences included a range of players, and he pursued cricket seriously as a young adult.
Career
Suhail's initial sporting path led him into professional cricket. In 2009 he was part of the Indian Premier League setup with Royal Challengers Bangalore and also played in the Champions League Twenty20. His playing career was curtailed by knee problems that required multiple surgeries, prompting a move away from competitive cricket.
After cricket, Suhail explored filmmaking and acting. He wrote and produced a short film titled Johnny Vetrivel and uploaded it online. That short film brought him to the attention of people in the Tamil film industry and led to a role in the 2013 Tamil action film Arrambam. He followed that with a part in the 2014 film Veeram, where he was credited as Kumaran.
At the same time he transitioned into broadcasting and presenting. Suhail joined Star Sports, where he established himself as a television host and commentator across several sports. His work for the network has included presenting high-profile cricket events such as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the ICC World Twenty20 2016, the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, and the Indian Premier League. Beyond cricket, he has hosted coverage of the Rio Olympics 2016, the FIA Formula E Series and the French Open, demonstrating a broad portfolio across team and individual sports.
Suhail has also hosted and produced digital-format programmes. In 2016 he launched India’s first Periscope TV chat show, On The Ball with Suhail, which featured guests from film and sport. His presenting range includes studio work, live event hosting and digital shows.
Recognition and other activities
While at the University of Adelaide, Suhail received the Oxford Cambridge Half-Blue award for cricketing excellence in 2007, noted as a significant first for an Indian recipient. In 2015 he was honoured with the Australian Alumni Excellence Award for achievements in sports, art and culture.
Outside broadcasting, Suhail has worked as a public speaker and has delivered talks for brands and events including MRF, PUMA, TATA Motors, GQ India and Premier Futsal. He has served as a brand ambassador for products and organisations such as Castrol Activ, StudyAdelaide, SportsNut App and Omologato Watches. He is fluent in English, Hindi and Tamil and maintains a focus on fitness as part of his professional and personal routine.
