Early life and background

Suhasini Maniratnam was born on 15 August 1961 in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Chennai. She attended a government school in Chennai before enrolling at Queen Mary’s College. After beginning a B.Sc. in physics, she left the program and joined the Madras Film Institute to study cinematography, graduating as the only woman in her class.

Her family includes her father Charuhasan and sisters Nandini Charuhasan and Subhashini Charuhasan. She later married film director Maniratnam in 1988, and the couple have a son, Nandan. Suhasini comes from a film-oriented background and is related to other members of that community.

Career

Suhasini entered the film world initially behind the camera, working as a camera assistant and as a make-up artist. She made her acting debut in the lead role in the 1980 Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe. Over the years she became a prominent performer in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films and expanded her creative roles to include direction, producing, dialogue writing, singing and hosting.

Her performances have been widely recognised. Suhasini won the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1986 for her work in Sindhu Bhairavi. She is a four-time recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Filmfare Awards South (1983, 1984, 1988 and 1990). She also won Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress twice, in 1987 and 2001, and has received Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Actress on two occasions. In 2014 she was honoured with the South Indian International Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sachin! Tendulkar Alla.

Beyond acting, Suhasini has released music albums such as Aandhra Vaibhavam and Siddayya Kadha Ganam. She has served on juries for film festivals and award functions, including participation in the ninth Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in 2012.
