Early life and background

Suhel Seth was born on 28 May 1963 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India. He spent his early years in Kolkata and later moved to Gurugram, Haryana. Seth attended La Martiniere Calcutta and St. Joseph's College in Nainital for his schooling. He went on to study at Jadavpur University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English honours and a Master of Arts in International Relations.

He comes from a Punjabi family. His father, Jogendra Seth, ran a chemical factory in Kolkata before it ceased operations during the period of labour unrest there. Seth has described how those events influenced his thinking about business. His mother is Shub Seth, and he has a younger brother named Swapan Seth.

Seth began his professional life in advertising, working with Contract Advertising under Shiben Dutt and later with agencies including Response India and Ogilvy & Mather. In March 1996 he and his brother founded the advertising agency Equus Red Cell. He subsequently co-founded a marketing consultancy, Quadra Advisory, with Shunu Sen, and in 2002 launched his own consultancy, Counselage India. Early clients of his consultancy included Coca-Cola India, the Delhi government, Jet Airways and the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Beyond consultancy, Seth has taken stakes and advisory roles across media and corporate boards. In 2003 he purchased a 30 percent holding in the uplinking venture Media Content and Communication Services (MCCS) and became its largest stakeholder. He has served on advisory and regional boards for organisations including British Airways, Cavendish, RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), Citibank and Coca-Cola. Seth served as a trustee of the India Brand Equity Foundation for nearly six years and has been brand advisor to the Indian Railways Ministry. He was a member of the Expert Committee on Railways and held leadership positions within industry bodies: he chaired the Marketing Summits of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 2005 to 2010 and was chairperson of national marketing committees at CII and FICCI around 2010–2011.

He has acted in several Bollywood films, with screen credits including Rog (2005), Guzaarish (2010), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Calendar Girls (2015).
