Sujata Bhatt was born on 6 May 1956 in Ahmedabad, India, and grew up in a family that encouraged storytelling and literature. Although born at her maternal grandparents' home in Ahmedabad, her childhood was based in Pune, where she attended St. Helena’s School. Her extended family played a formative role: relatives who wrote and educated her inspired an early interest in narrative and poetry.

Bhatt's childhood involved several moves between India and the United States. At age five her family relocated to New Orleans for a period, returned to Pune when she was eight, and later moved to Connecticut after she turned twelve, where she completed her formal education. During college she combined scientific study with a deepening engagement with literature, studying languages such as French and German to read writers in their original languages.

She completed undergraduate work at Goucher College in Baltimore, earning a degree that combined science and literature, and went on to receive an MFA from the University of Iowa. Early in her professional life she worked as a research assistant and medical intern at Johns Hopkins University Medical School.

Career

Bhatt made her poetic debut with the collection Brunizem, published in 1987. The book collected poems she had written in her early twenties and explored themes of separation from home, memory, and the shifting experiences of life across Europe, North America and India. Poems from Brunizem that have been highlighted include "Search for My Tongue," "Swami Anand," and "Go to Ahmedabad." The collection brought immediate recognition and won several awards.

Over the following years Bhatt published additional collections, including Monkey Shadows (1991), Point No Point (1997), Augatora (2000), and The Colour of Solitude (2002). Her work has addressed intimate and sometimes difficult subjects, including women's experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, and has been recognized for its willingness to approach subjects that were formerly taboo in contemporary poetry.

Her poems have been translated into more than twenty languages, and her writing draws on a wide range of literary influences she encountered in translation and in the originals—poets and writers from varied linguistic traditions whom she read while living between cultures.

Bhatt has received multiple honours for her work. Her first collection earned the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Asia) and the Alice Hunt Bartlett Prize. She was later awarded the Cholmondeley Award in 1991 and the Italian Tratti Poetry Prize in 2000.
