Early life and background

Sujoy Ghosh was born on 21 May 1966 in Tollygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal. He spent part of his childhood reading Bengali popular fiction and later moved to London at the age of 13, where he completed his schooling and higher education. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computing from Manchester University (1986–89) and an MBA from Alliance Manchester Business School (1990–92).

Career

Ghosh began his professional life outside cinema, including a notable tenure at Reuters where he ultimately served as Head of the South Asia division in the 1990s. He transitioned into filmmaking and made his directorial debut with the feature film Jhankaar Beats in 2003. Over the next two decades he established himself as a writer-director with a taste for mystery and offbeat subjects.

His breakout came with the 2012 mystery thriller Kahaani, starring Vidya Balan. The film performed strongly with critics and audiences and brought Ghosh several honours, including national recognition for screenplay and multiple awards for direction and story. He continued to write and direct films including Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (2016), Badla (2019), Bob Biswas (2021), and Jaane Jaan (2023).

In addition to feature work, Ghosh has written and directed short films and projects for other formats. His 2015 short film Ahalya, which reimagines a mythic episode, received critical attention; he also made the short Anukul in 2017. As an actor he has appeared in small roles and cameos in films such as My Brother Nikhil, Bluffmaster, Tara Rum Pum, Nobel Chor, and the Bengali Satyenweshi, in which he portrayed Byomkesh Bakshi.

Ghosh has also produced films under his production company, Boundscript Motion Pictures Private Limited, which he founded in 2005. His production slate includes commercial ventures and projects that explore different genres and narrative forms.
