Sukhbir Singh Badal was born on 9 July 1962 in Faridkot, Punjab. He grew up in a family with deep political roots: his father is Parkash Singh Badal, a long-serving figure in Punjab politics. Sukhbir attended The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and went on to study at Panjab University, Chandigarh, where he completed a master's in economics. He also holds an MBA from California State University, Los Angeles. He is from Badal Village in Lambi Tehsil, Muktsar District, and practices Sikhism.

Career

Badal entered national politics in 1996 when he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from the Faridkot constituency. He retained the seat in 1998, serving in the 12th Lok Sabha, and during that period he was appointed Union Minister of State for Industry in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

After serving in the Lok Sabha, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. He returned to the Lok Sabha in 2004, elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Faridkot. In January 2008 he became president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the following year he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. He has been associated with several later parliamentary terms, including election to the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019 from Ferozpur, Punjab.

In November 2024 he stepped down from the presidency of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
