Early life and background

Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was born on 12 July in Bhadra, Rajasthan. He hailed from a Rajput family and was raised in the region that later became associated with his public work. He completed schooling up to the 10th grade. Gogamedi was married on 20 April 2009 to Sheela Shekhawat Gogamedi and the couple had daughters Urvashi Shekhawat and Yashasvi Shekhawat. His parents were Anchal Singh Shekhawat and Icharaj Kanwar, the latter of whom died on 9 December 2020. He was the eldest among his siblings, which include brothers Dalip Singh and Kan Singh, and a sister, Madhu Kanwar.

Career

Gogamedi was best known for his leadership role in the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (SRRKS), a Rajput advocacy organization in Rajasthan. He rose within Karni Sena politics at a time when the original group had fractured into multiple factions; by 2018 there were distinct bodies led by Lokendra Singh Kalvi, Ajeet Singh Mamdoli and Gogamedi himself. After being expelled from one faction in 2015 on the grounds of criminal charges, he established and led his own faction, identifying as president of the SRRKS.

Under his leadership, the SRRKS pursued several regional aims, including calls for increased representation and benefits for Rajputs. In April 2023 the SRRKS organized a Kesariya Mahapanchayat in Jaipur to press for an increase in Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation from 10 percent to 14 percent, the creation of a Kshatriya Rajput Kalyan Board at the state level, and relaxed conditions for EWS reservation in central government recruitment.

Public profile

Gogamedi was a conspicuous figure in Rajasthan political and social life, often seen participating in public rallies and religious observances associated with Karni Mata, a tutelary deity for many Rajput communities. His activism drew national attention on several occasions. He became a prominent voice during the protests that followed the 2017 encounter of gangster Anand Pal Singh, a period marked by violent demonstrations in parts of Rajasthan. Gogamedi also took part in the high-profile protests against the 2018 film Padmaavat; his faction joined other Karni Sena groups in staging demonstrations and, at times, confrontational actions over the film’s portrayal of historical figures.

Controversies associated with Gogamedi included widely circulated videos that prompted police inquiries. One such incident from 2017 involved remarks he made at an anti-reservation rally that drew scrutiny, and in 2019 a video showing him issuing threats to pilgrims at the Ajmer Dargah led to a formal complaint and police attention.

Physical and personal notes

Gogamedi was of Indian nationality and practiced Hinduism. He stood around 178 cm (about 5 feet 10 inches) tall and was described as having black hair and black eyes. His listed hometown was Jaipur, Rajasthan, and his caste identification was Rajput. His zodiac sign was Cancer.

Death and immediate aftermath

On 5 December 2023, Gogamedi was shot by unidentified assailants inside his home in the Shyam Nagar area of Jaipur. CCTV captured the attack; four people entered his residence and opened fire. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to gunshot wounds. One of the attackers, identified in reports as Naveen Singh Shekhawat, was killed in retaliatory firing at the scene. A companion, Ajit Singh, suffered serious injuries. In the days following the killing, local supporters held protests and several Rajput groups called for shutdowns and demonstrations in multiple districts. Authorities named two suspects, Rohit Rathore Makrana and Nitin Fauji, and announced a reward for information leading to their arrest. A separate claim of responsibility was posted on social media by an individual who said the killing was connected to gang rivalries.
