Sukhdev Thapar Biography

Sukhdev Thapar was a young Indian revolutionary and key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. Active in organizing revolutionary cells,

Early life and background

Sukhdev Thapar was born on 15 May 1907 in Ludhiana, Punjab, British India. He was raised in a Punjabi Hindu family; his parents were Ramlal Thapar and Ralli Devi. Sukhdev lost his father when he was young and was brought up by his uncle. He attended Lahore’s National College, where he completed his graduation and became involved with student circles that discussed political change and international revolutions such as the Russian Revolution.

Career

While still very young, Sukhdev joined the struggle against British colonial rule. He became a prominent member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), rising to a leadership role in the organization’s Punjab unit. Within the HSRA he was known as an effective organizer: he helped set up revolutionary cells across Punjab and other parts of northern India, recruited new members, and took part in strategic planning for the group’s activities.

Sukhdev worked closely with fellow revolutionaries including Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru. He was involved in the operations tied to the Lahore Conspiracy Case of 1929–1930 and was registered by the police as the primary accused in that case. During the period of his activism he participated in prisoner protest actions such as a hunger strike after an arrest in 1929.

The HSRA planned and carried out several dramatic actions against colonial authorities. Sukhdev played a central role in organizational decisions and was described by comrades as the person who built the Punjab party’s structure. He also participated in discussions and disputes about operational choices within the HSRA, including debates over who should carry out particular missions.

On 17 December 1928, the assassination of Assistant Superintendent of Police J. P. Saunders took place; Sukhdev was implicated along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru in connection with that event. In April 1929, he and other HSRA members were arrested in relation to the Central Assembly Hall bombing case. The Lahore Conspiracy Case tribunal later identified him as a principal accused, and he was convicted in the cases that followed.

Public profile

Sukhdev was publicly identified with the HSRA’s revolutionist agenda and became a widely recognized figure in the independence movement. He was described by fellow prisoners and later writers as a stern organizer with deep personal commitment to the cause—stubborn and disciplined on the outside while privately feeling strong attachments to friends and colleagues. Accounts from his comrades highlight his organizational talents and his responsibility for recruiting and mobilizing youth for the HSRA’s activities.

He was also a public speaker while at the National College in Lahore, where he sought to educate and inspire young people about India’s past and its struggle for freedom. His dedication and actions drew broad attention at the time, and news of his arrest and trial was widely reported.

Death and legacy

Sukhdev Thapar was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on 23 March 1931 at Lahore Central Jail at the age of 23. He was executed alongside Bhagat Singh and Rajguru. Following their deaths, the British authorities secretly cremated their bodies at the Sutlej river bank. The executions provoked extensive press coverage and commentary at home and abroad, and they left a lasting impact on public opinion during the independence movement.

In independent India, Sukhdev’s sacrifice has been commemorated in several ways. The government established the Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh and Rajguru National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala where the three were cremated. The central government declared 23 March as Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) in remembrance of their sacrifice. Educational and civic memorials have also been named in his honor, including a Delhi college and the main bus terminal in Ludhiana.
