Early life and background

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was born on 27 March 1964 in Sera village near Nadaun in Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in Nadaun and completed his school education at Government High School, Kasumpti in Shimla. He went on to study at Govt. Degree College, Sanjauli and Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, earning a Master of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Law.

His family background was modest. His father, Rashil Singh, worked as a driver for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation, while his mother, Sansar Dei, is described as a homemaker. Sukhu later married Kamlesh Thakur; the couple have two daughters.

Sukhu began his public life in student politics. During his college years he was active in the National Students' Union of India and at Himachal Pradesh University.
