Early life and background

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was born on 27 March 1964 in Sera village near Nadaun in Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in Nadaun and completed his school education at Government High School, Kasumpti in Shimla. He went on to study at Govt. Degree College, Sanjauli and Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, earning a Master of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Law.

His family background was modest. His father, Rashil Singh, worked as a driver for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation, while his mother, Sansar Dei, is described as a homemaker. Sukhu later married Kamlesh Thakur; the couple have two daughters.

Career

Sukhu began his public life in student politics. During his college years he was active in the National Students' Union of India and at Himachal Pradesh University. His early political work included leadership roles in youth wings and local government: he served as state president of the NSUI, later became state president of the Indian National Youth Congress, and served multiple terms as a councillor of the Shimla municipal corporation in the 1990s and early 2000s.

He first entered the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. Between 2007 and 2012 he served as Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party. Over the following decade he continued to hold significant party responsibilities, including a tenure as president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee from 2013 to 2019.

Sukhu returned to the Vidhan Sabha in 2017 and was later nominated to several assembly committees, including the Public Undertakings, Privileges and Business Advisory Committees. In the 2022 state assembly elections he won the Nadaun constituency. When the Congress secured a majority in that election, Sukhu was sworn in as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh on 11 December 2022.

As chief minister he announced intentions to restore the Old Pension System in the state. In public and political circles in Shimla he had been known for years for driving a Maruti Suzuki Alto; that image followed him into his chief ministership and drew public attention when he arrived at the state assembly in the same vehicle for the budget session in March 2023.
