Sukumar Bandreddi was born on 11 January 1970 in Andhra Pradesh and raised in Mattaparru in the East Godavari district. He completed school at the Zilla Parishad High School in his hometown and went on to earn a Master of Mathematics. Before entering the film industry he worked as a lecturer, teaching mathematics and physics at Aditya Junior College in Kakinada for six years.

Career

Sukumar began his film career as a writer and assistant to established directors before making his directorial and writing debut with the Telugu feature Arya in 2004. That breakthrough film established him as a creative force in Telugu cinema and won him recognition for screenplay and direction.

Over the following years he developed a reputation for directing and writing a string of commercial and critically noticed Telugu films, including Jagadam (2007), 100% Love (2011), 1: Nenokkadine (2014), Nannaku Prematho (2016) and Pushpa: The Rise (2021).
