Sulajja Firodia Motwani was born on 26 August 1970 in Pune, Maharashtra. She grew up in a family with deep ties to the Indian automobile industry: her father, Arun Firodia, founded the Firodia Group, and her grandfather H. K. Firodia established Kinetic Engineering. Sulajja completed her schooling at Garware School in Pune and earned a bachelor of commerce degree from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune University. At 21 she went to the United States to pursue an MBA at Carnegie Mellon University.

Career

After finishing her MBA, Sulajja worked for several years in sales and finance at an investment consultancy in California. She returned to India in 1996 following the death of her grandfather and joined Kinetic Engineering, where she took responsibility for company strategy, sales, marketing and finance as the business navigated a changing competitive landscape.
