Sumit Anand Biography

Sumit Anand is an Indian stand-up comedian and writer from Rohtak, Haryana. Known for a relaxed, slacker stage persona and observational humour about his H

Early life and background

Sumit Anand was born on 15 September 1985 in Rohtak, Haryana. He grew up in that town and attended D A V Centenary Public School before moving on to Kurukshetra University for a B.Tech. in Computer Science and then completing a PGDM in Marketing/Finance at Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management in New Delhi. He has said that his given name at birth was Amit Anand and that he later adopted the name Sumit.

From an early age he took part in activities that used his voice and presence: debate, extempore and improvisation featured during his college years, and he was active in his college marketing club. Those experiences helped shape a stage-ready performer who would later turn those skills into comedy.

Career

After finishing his post-graduate studies, Sumit worked in finance and digital businesses in Delhi. His early professional roles included private wealth management at HDFC Bank and a portfolio manager position at IndusInd Bank. He then moved into digital sales and marketing and spent several years with PaGaLGuY.com as general manager for digital sales and marketing, before working as a business consultant with Ideatory.

Sumit began performing stand-up in 2013. He made his debut on YouTube with a piece titled "Dumb Indian Announcements" in 2015 and went on to build a reputation on the Indian comedy circuit for a laid-back, effortless delivery and observational material drawn frequently from his upbringing in Haryana. By 2020 he had performed more than 100 shows across India and became a regular on NDTV Prime's comedy series "The Rising Stars of Comedy." He has taken his work overseas as well, appearing twice at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and performing at the Soho Theatre in London as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Sumit has produced solo shows that reflect his comic voice, including "Many Mistakes Of My Life" and "Nothing About Godzilla," the latter of which uses the Hollywood film as a recurring touchpoint in the set. He has also collaborated with peers in the scene, notably working with fellow comedian Abhishek Upmanyu on a 2015 special called "The Stupid Show."

On digital platforms he has reached large audiences; his YouTube video "My Job, My Home & The Maid" surpassed 12 million views, demonstrating his appeal beyond live venues.

Public profile

On stage, Sumit cultivates an affable, self-deprecating slacker persona and has described himself as both anti-social and lazy—traits that feed into his comic style. He cites international comedians such as James Acaster, Daniel Kitson and Hannah Gadsby among his influences, and lists Woody Allen as a favourite writer. He plays the guitar and is known to prefer non-vegetarian food.

Personal life

Sumit is married to Deepali. His family background includes a father who worked as a doctor. He is Hindu by religion. He owns a Hyundai i10.

Latest updates

As of 2020, Sumit was 35 years old and continuing to perform live and online. His career has moved from finance and digital marketing into full-time comedy and writing, with notable international festival appearances and regular television exposure. His blog and social posts have offered personal reflections about his earlier life and schooling, including anecdotes about changing his birth name and his experience with the Indian education system.
